Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Rush Orders, Real Talk: An Emergency Specialist's FAQ on Getting It Done

If you're staring down a deadline that's way too close for comfort, you probably have some very specific, very urgent questions. I've been the person coordinating emergency print and fulfillment for publishers and authors for over 7 years. I've handled 200+ rush orders, including same-day turnarounds for major conference exhibitors and last-minute book launches. This FAQ is based on that grind—what actually works, what costs you more, and how to survive.

1. "How much extra does 'rush' really cost?"

Way more than the quoted fee. Seriously. The rush fee is just the ticket to the show. In March 2024, we had a client call 36 hours before a book signing needing 50 copies. The base print cost was $350. The "rush fee" was $120. But the real cost? We paid $180 for expedited freight to get it there, plus a $50 internal handling fee for our team to drop everything. Total premium: $350, doubling the cost. The bottom line? Always ask for the all-in rush quote, not just the service upgrade.

2. "Can I trust a vendor's 'guaranteed' turnaround time?"

You can weight it. Here's my rule after getting burned: A "guarantee" from a massive, integrated operation like Lightning Source (Ingram's POD arm) is different from one at a small local shop. The big players have system-wide buffers and redundancies. The small shop has one press operator who might call in sick. Last quarter, we processed 47 rush orders with a 95% on-time rate. The 5% that failed were all with smaller vendors whose "guarantee" just meant they'd refund the rush fee after they missed the deadline—which doesn't help you when the books aren't at the event.

3. "What's the one thing I should double-check on a rush order?"

Shipping address and logistics. No-brainer. It sounds trivial, but you'd be shocked. I once paid $800 in rush fees for a perfect print job, only to have it sent to an old warehouse address because someone auto-filled a form. The most frustrating part? It was completely avoidable. We got the books re-shipped overnight (another $300) and just barely made it. Note to self: Verify the ship-to location like it's a nuclear code.

4. "Is it worth paying for a physical proof on a rush job?"

This is a classic penny-wise, pound-foolish moment. Saved $45 and 24 hours by skipping the hardcopy proof on a short-run brochure. The color came out totally wrong—the corporate blue looked purple. Ended up spending $400 on a rush reprint and we had to use the ugly ones at the event anyway. Net loss: $445 and a lot of embarrassment. For anything where color or finish is critical, the proof is non-negotiable, even on a tight timeline. Some vendors offer expedited digital proofs (soft proofs) which are better than nothing, but for exact color, you need that physical copy.

5. "My order is small. Will vendors even care about my rush request?"

Good vendors will. A "small order friendly" policy is a major green flag for me. When I was working with a startup author, the vendors who treated their $200, 25-copy rush order seriously are the ones we still use for $20,000 print runs. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential. That said, be realistic. A $100 order probably won't jump the queue ahead of a $10,000 one, but a professional vendor will communicate that clearly and still try to help. If you feel like you're being brushed off, that's a vendor problem, not a you problem.

6. "What's a 'red flag' when vetting a vendor for rush work?"

Vagueness. If they say "we'll try our best" or "it usually ships next day," run. You need concrete, binary answers: "Yes, we can have it on press by 3 PM EST today if files are approved by noon." Or "No, our same-day cutoff was 10 AM." Based on our internal data from 200+ rush jobs, the vendors with the highest on-time rates are the ones who give you specific, non-negotiable deadlines and clear escalation paths. The ones who deal in "usually" and "should" are a gamble you can't afford.

7. "I need something faster than 'rush.' What are my options?"

This is where you get creative—and where costs go way up. Normal turnaround might be 5 days, rush gets it to 3. But if you need it in 48 hours? Your options shrink. For print, you're looking at local shops with walk-in service or paying super-premium fees at a national printer to hijack a press slot. For something like book fulfillment from a distributor, you're often at the mercy of their production schedule. Sometimes, the solution isn't a faster vendor, but a workaround: Can you print a small batch locally for the event and have the full run follow? Can you use a digital proof for sign-off to save a day? The answer is almost never cheap, but it sometimes exists.

8. "Any final, hard-won advice?"

Build in a buffer. Always. After the third time a "guaranteed 2-day" delivery took 3, our company policy now requires us to build in a 48-hour buffer for any critical deadline. It's not pessimism; it's pattern recognition. That buffer has saved projects more times than I can count. So if your event is Friday, tell the vendor you need it Wednesday. The peace of mind is worth way more than the two days of wiggle room you think you're giving up.
