Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Fillmore Container & The Hidden Cost of Procurement: Why I Stopped Chasing Discounts (and You Should Too)

  • Bottom Line: Update Your Old Thinking

When I first started managing procurement for our mid-size beverage company, I assumed the best packaging suppliers were the ones offering the biggest Fillmore Container coupon code discounts. Honestly, I was wrong. Two years and a bunch of budget overruns later, I realized that focusing on the upfront price tag was costing us way more than I ever calculated. The industry is evolving, and the old way of thinking about supplier cost—just the unit price minus a coupon—needs a serious update.

The Initial Misjudgment: Discount Codes vs. Total Cost

Back in Q1 2023, when I first took over our packaging budget (about $180,000 annually at the time), I was obsessed with finding the next big deal. I'd spend hours comparing the products offered by Fillmore Container against other catalog giants like Uline or SKS Bottle. My spreadsheet was full of unit prices, coupon percentages, and shipping estimates. But here's what I missed: the hidden costs.

For instance, I once jumped on a supplier's bulk order because they offered a 15% discount—basically a killer deal at the time. But that order didn't account for the specific hydrogenized water bottle caps we needed. We ended up buying caps in a separate, non-discounted order from a second vendor. The total cost with split shipping and handling fees ate up the entire discount. Literally a waste of time. Note to self: check if the coupon applies to the entire cart or specific lines.

Why Evaluating "Products Offered by Fillmore Container" is a Smart Framework

I get it—stepping into a catalog as big as Fillmore Container can be kind of overwhelming. They offer a ton of stuff: glass jars for cosmetic makers, bulk bottles for specialty beverages, and even unique items like a laptop tote bag valencia (yes, they have non-plastic packaging supplies). So where do you even start?

I've developed a process over the past six years of tracking every invoice. Instead of just filtering by price, I filter by fit. Here's my framework:

  • 1. Check the specs first, price second. The cost of a wrong bottle size—like ordering a 12oz tall when you need a 16oz wide mouth for your syrup—is way higher than the cost of the bottle itself. It means re-packaging, lost product, or angry customers.
  • 2. Look for bundling. Do they carry the lids and the containers together? Sourcing everything from one supplier (like Fillmore) often saves on freight, even if the Fillmore Container coupon code is only for a specific category. The logistics savings beat the 5% discount every time.
  • 3. Consider the niche items. Is the hydrogenized water bottle market growing? If you're making those, you need specific closures that fit the electrolysis process. A general supplier might not stock those. Fillmore Container's variety (from standard mason jars to specialty bottles) is a big advantage here.

A Personal Example: The "High-End" Envelope Fiasco

Another classic mistake of mine involved custom envelope stickers and figuring out where to put attention on envelope design. We needed custom-printed labels for a luxury cosmetic line. The cheapest printer quoted a great price, but they didn't understand the USPS regulations for the attention on envelope placement.

According to USPS Business Mail 101 (usps.com), the placement of the attention on envelope line is critical—it must be below the address block and left of the bar code. Our cheap printer put it in the wrong spot. We had to reprint 2,000 envelopes. The reprint cost us $1,200 (unfortunately). Had I sourced the envelopes and labels from a packaging specialist like Fillmore Container, who likely knows this rule (because they deal with it constantly), I could have avoided that mess.

How I Use Fillmore Container for My Sourcing Strategy

So, do I use a Fillmore Container coupon code when I order? Totally. But I don't let it drive the bus. Here's my approach:

For standard items (like 8oz glass Boston rounds for our flavor extracts), I check the products offered by Fillmore Container against their pricing without a code. If their base price is competitive, the code is just a bonus. However, for specialty items—like that laptop tote bag valencia material for a promotional packaging concept—I know I'm not going to find that same density of sustainable materials elsewhere. The value isn't the discount; the value is access to that specific product.

The Counter-Argument: You Might Not Need Bulk From Fillmore

I can only speak to my situation (mid-size, repeat orders). If you're a small startup making your first batch of hot sauce, you probably don't need to worry about the same things I do. A Fillmore Container coupon code might be the difference between staying in budget or going under. For you, the big catalog is intimidating. You just need 144 bottles and 144 lids, and you want the cheapest price. That's fair.

But then again, consider this: if you buy that cheap lot and the caps don't form a perfect seal (cause a leak), you've lost 144 units of product plus the cost of the bottles. That's a major budget hit. Even for small runs, quality from a place like Fillmore Container (which specializes in this) can save you from that headache.

Bottom Line: Update Your Old Thinking

What was best practice in 2020—just chase the lowest unit price or the biggest coupon—doesn't apply in 2025. The products offered by Fillmore Container are a tool, not just a catalog to copy-paste from. Use their variety to simplify your supply chain. Use their pricing to benchmark, but don't stop there. The real savings come from getting the right product the first time, avoiding reprints, and consolidating shipments.

So yes, grab the Fillmore Container coupon code if it applies. But first, ask yourself if the hydrogenized water bottle lid you need fits the neck perfectly. Ask yourself if that laptop tote bag valencia custom print won't get rejected by USPS for bad attention on envelope placement. That's the kind of thinking that actually saves you a ton of money. It's way more effective than just looking for a deal.
