Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Scratch Off Card Printing FAQ: What Every Buyer Should Know Before Ordering

Posted on Friday 21st of August 2026
  • 1. What's the difference between a scratch off card and a lottery ticket?
  • 2. How do I verify a scratch card printer is legitimate and anti-fraud?
  • 3. What's the real cost of bulk custom scratch off card printing?
  • 4. Can I mail scratch off cards through USPS?
  • 5. What customization options actually matter for marketing scratch off tickets?
  • 6. Do I need a license to use scratch off cards for promotions?
  • 7. How long does it take to get a bulk order?
  • 8. How do I choose between a local vs global scratch card supplier?

I've been the person in charge of ordering marketing materials for a 50-person company for about four years now. When we started running promotion campaigns, someone suggested scratch off tickets as a giveaway. I thought, "How hard can it be?" Turns out – harder than it looks if you don't ask the right questions first. Here's what I wish someone had told me before I placed that first order.

1. What's the difference between a scratch off card and a lottery ticket?

It's all about intent and regulation. Lottery tickets are government-run games of chance with strict rules. Scratch off cards for marketing are promotional tools where the prize is fixed and everyone who receives one wins something (like a discount or a small gift). Totally different legal status. When we first started, I almost called them "instant win cards" – that can cause confusion. Stick to "scratch off cards" or "promotional scratch off tickets."

2. How do I verify a scratch card printer is legitimate and anti-fraud?

This was my biggest worry. You don't want someone tampering with your cards. Legitimate printers use features like random scratch-off patterns, microtext, and tamper-evident seals. Ask for samples and check the scratch-off coating – it should be opaque and uniform. I also recommend visiting the facility if possible, or at least getting references from other marketing agencies. A global scratch card supplier with a track record can share certifications (like ISO 9001). I learned this the hard way when a cheap supplier's cards had inconsistent coating – some scratched off too easily. (Note to self: always inspect before paying the final invoice.)

3. What's the real cost of bulk custom scratch off card printing?

You'll see quotes like $0.20 per card for 10,000 pieces. Sounds cheap, right? That's just the unit price. Add in: artwork setup fee (often $50–$150), color matching (if you need a specific Pantone), shipping (scratch off cards are heavy – typical UPS ground for 10,000 cards runs $40–$80), and maybe a rush charge. Then there's the cost of your time verifying fulfillment. I now calculate TCO before comparing any vendor quotes. The $400 quote from Vendor A turned into $580 after all fees. Vendor B's $550 all-inclusive was actually cheaper. Prices as of Q1 2025; verify current rates.

4. Can I mail scratch off cards through USPS?

Yes, but with restrictions. According to USPS (usps.com), standard scratch off cards fit into a #10 envelope (4.125″ × 9.5″) and qualify as First-Class Mail if under 1 oz. If you're mailing larger cards (like 4″ × 6″) as a Flat, the rate jumps. Key rule: the envelope must be opaque enough that the scratch-off coating isn't visible. Also, you can't include any wording that implies it's a lottery ticket (that's illegal under 18 U.S. Code § 1302). When we mailed 5,000 cards for a promotion, we used a plain white envelope with a window – the Post Office flagged it because the scratch-off was visible through the window. Cost us $200 in re-mailing. Learn from my mistake.

5. What customization options actually matter for marketing scratch off tickets?

You can go wild with foil stamping, embossing, custom shapes, even scented coating. But for most B2B promotions, the practical choices are:

  • Card stock weight – too thin feels cheap, too thick jams printers. 14pt or 16pt card stock is standard.
  • Scratch-off size – a 0.75″ × 0.75″ area is enough for a short message.
  • Variable data printing – you want each card to have a unique code? That adds cost but reduces fraud.
  • Security features – microprint, UV ink, holograms. Not needed for a simple 10% off, but for a high-value prize? Worth it.

We once ordered 20,000 cards with a metallic gold base and a circular scratch-off area. Looked amazing. The printer delivered them six weeks late. (We had a 4-week deadline. Missed the campaign.) I now ask for a production timeline in writing and build in a 2-week buffer.

6. Do I need a license to use scratch off cards for promotions?

Most likely not, but you need to comply with FTC guidelines (ftc.gov). The FTC says promotional scratch-off games must be clearly communicated – odds of winning, prize descriptions, no deceptive terms. If you're running a sweepstakes (giveaway with chance), you might need to disclose the rules and have a no-purchase-necessary option. I'm not a lawyer, but our legal team gave us a brief: always include a "promotion details" link and a clear disclaimer. Verify current state regulations; some states (like Florida or New York) have stricter rules for promotions over $5,000 total prize value.

7. How long does it take to get a bulk order?

Average lead time for custom scratch off card printing from a US supplier: 10–15 business days for design + printing + shipping. Overseas suppliers (like a global scratch card supplier based in China) can be 4–6 weeks including ocean freight. We use a mix: domestic for urgent campaigns (pay extra), overseas for big runs where we have 8 weeks of lead. I also ask for a digital proof before they print – that adds a day but saves reprint costs. Timelines as of 2024; the industry has been experiencing longer delays since 2022 due to paper shortages.

8. How do I choose between a local vs global scratch card supplier?

People assume local is more reliable. Sometimes true. But a global supplier with a US warehouse can be just as fast and cheaper. The key questions: Where is the inventory held? What's the shipping lead time to your door? What's their return policy for defective cards? I once saved 30% by using a global supplier who stocked my card design in their US hub. Then the hub ran out, and they had to air-freight from overseas – cost me the savings. So now I ask: "Can you guarantee that quantity will be in the US warehouse at the time of order?" If they hedge, I look elsewhere.

That's the short version of what I've learned. Your situation might be different – maybe you're running a high-stakes lottery-style promotion, or you need cards that fit into a specific envelope. The best advice I can give? Call three printers, ask these questions, and compare total cost (not just unit price). And don't forget to check the scratch-off coating samples before you commit. I've learned that lesson four times now. (Still kicking myself.)
