Six years ago, I took over packaging procurement for a 40-person food company. Since then I've tracked every invoice in a cost spreadsheet, negotiated with 20+ vendors, and analyzed about $180,000 in cumulative spending. Along the way, I've been asked—and asked myself—some odd questions. Here are six of them. Some are about Duck brand products, some about packaging in general, and one is about a printing accident.

1. Are Duck cups a smart buy?
I can't give you a spec-by-spec review of every duck cup on the market—that's a product manager's job, and I don't have hard data on their lids' failure rates. But from a procurement point of view, the right question isn't "is this cup cheap?" It's "what's the total cost per served cup?"
Last spring I compared two cup suppliers for an event: Supplier A quoted $0.08 per cup plus a $150 plate charge. Supplier B quoted $0.09 per cup with no plate charge. For 5,000 cups, A was $550 and B was $450. B looked like the winner until our warehouse reported breakage—6% of B's cups arrived cracked. After replacing the lost units, B cost $477 and caused a weekend scramble. Bottom line: compare total delivered cost, not the sticker price.
If you're buying fewer than 500 cups, local pickup may beat both online options. That's the honest limitation: volume discounts only help when you have the space to store them.
2. Can a duck tape wallet actually hold up?
Yes, a duck tape wallet can hold up—if you set expectations. I've made one myself (mental note: never spend an afternoon again). A roll of Duck tape costs about $7, and one wallet uses maybe a third of the roll. That's $2.50 in material plus about an hour of folding and cutting if you're not careful.
As a buyer, I count time as part of cost. If your time is worth $25/hour, that wallet is a $27.50 wallet. It's a no-brainer for a fun project, but I wouldn't recommend it as a commercial product or corporate gift—quality consistency is a red flag. And if you want a wallet for daily heavy use, buy one. The tape wallet is better for gym days and festivals.
I'm not a materials engineer, so I can't tell you how the adhesive reacts to body heat over years. Based on my experience, though, it's durable enough for a summer.
3. What does a duck foot print mean?
If you're searching "duck foot print," I think you mean "duck footprint"—the environmental impact of Duck-brand packaging. (Not an actual bird print, which would be cuter but less useful.) If you literally meant a duck's footprint, I can't help with that—unless it's on packaging artwork.
A supplier once told me their tape was "100% eco-friendly." That phrase means almost nothing. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental claims must be truthful and substantiated. If a product is labeled "recyclable," it should be recyclable in areas where at least 60% of consumers have access. "Green" and "eco-safe" are vague—ask for the exact standard and the percentage of recycled content.
I'm not a sustainability auditor, so I can't certify anything. But from a cost perspective, a vague eco claim can hide a premium price. You might pay 30% more for a label that has no measurable benefit. That's a deal-breaker if it's just a marketing badge.
4. How much should a san flyer cost?
You typed "san flyer"—I'm guessing you mean San Francisco, San Antonio, or simply "a flyer." I'll answer for a standard one-page flyer. Here's a ballpark from my last order: 2,500 single-sided, full-color, 8.5×11 flyers on 100lb gloss text cost $220, about $0.09 each. Setup was free, but I paid $65 for proofing and file conversion because I sent a low-resolution PDF. That was a rookie mistake I don't repeat.
If you're mailing flyers, add postage. According to USPS (usps.com), as of January 2025, at least, a First-Class Mail large envelope starts at $1.50 for 1 ounce, and each additional ounce is $0.28. Your flyer plus an envelope can easily weigh over an ounce, so design for weight. One year I approved a "standard" flyer without checking the envelope dimensions—we both said "standard" but meant different things. Result: an extra $300 in postage and a re-run.
Online printers like 48 Hour Print work well for standard quantities (25 to 25,000+). If you need same-day in-hand delivery or fewer than 25 pieces, a local shop is usually the better call.
5. Does super glue and baking soda on plastic actually work?
It does work for small, non-structural plastic repairs. Baking soda plus super glue forms a hard composite faster than almost anything I've used. Material cost is trivial: a tube of super glue is $3, a box of baking soda is $1. I fixed a cracked battery compartment cover on a $200 tool with this trick, and it held for two years.
That said, I have mixed feelings about DIY repairs. They can be brilliant or false economy. If the part is under heavy load, exposed to heat, or safety-critical, replace it. A $15 replacement that lasts five years is cheaper than a $2 repair that fails in six months and takes down a machine. That's total cost of ownership, not material cost.
I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I can't speak to tensile strength or heat limits. But for a quick fix that saves a trip to the store, this trick is legit.
6. Who invented the cardboard box?
So, who invented the cardboard box? Most packaging histories credit Robert Gair, a Scottish-American printer in Brooklyn, with inventing the pre-cut cardboard box in 1890. The story goes that a misaligned press blade creased and sliced a sheet in one pass—and Gair realized that same accident could mass-produce foldable boxes. I don't have a peer-reviewed citation in front of me (one of those facts I wish I'd tracked better), but the name and date appear consistently in industry histories.
Why should a procurement person care? Because that printing error transformed shipping costs. Before foldable boxes, wood crates were heavy and labor-intensive. Corrugated boxes ship flat, set up in seconds, and weigh almost nothing. That's why the cardboard box is still the workhorse of packaging. A standard box may cost less than a dollar, but the real cost is hidden in dimensional weight—so the cheapest box isn't always the cheapest to ship.
