Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Food Product Packaging: Comparing Substrate Options for Performance and Cost

Walking through the grocery aisle last week, I stopped in front of the snack section. Not because I was hungry, but because a bag of chips caught my eye in a way that felt almost intentional. The matte finish, the slightly rough texture under my fingers, the way the light didn't bounce off the surface. It felt honest, premium, and—dare I say—craft. That's when it hit me: eco friendly product packaging isn't just a trend anymore. It's the new baseline. But getting it right? That's where the real work begins.

Here's the thing about food packaging: it has to do about a dozen jobs at once. Protect the product, preserve freshness, communicate brand values, and persuade a shopper in under three seconds. And if you're trying to do all that while keeping costs in check and sustainability in mind, the choices can feel overwhelming.

I've spent the last few years working with brands both big and small, helping them navigate these exact trade-offs. And honestly, there's no single "perfect" solution. But there are smart compromises—and I've seen them work.

What Consumers Actually Notice on the Shelf

We like to think shoppers make rational decisions. They read ingredients. They compare grams of protein. They check expiration dates. But the reality is messier—and more interesting. Most purchases happen in a split second of emotion. And that emotion is often triggered by the packaging itself.

Take a recent project I worked on with a mid-sized granola brand. They came to us wanting to "look organic"—which turned out to mean kraft paper, minimal ink, and a soft-touch coating. But when we tested their prototypes against the current market leaders, something surprising happened. Their design scored higher on "trust" but lower on "desirability." Shoppers thought it looked healthier but weren't as likely to buy it. That was a hard pill to swallow.

The lesson? Sustainability matters. But so does shelf appeal. If your eco friendly product packaging looks too plain or too rough, it can actually work against you. It's not about choosing between green and glamorous—it's about finding the middle ground where both live comfortably.

Kraft vs. CCNB: Real-World Performance Differences

Let's talk substrates. Two of the most common choices for food cartons today are Kraft paper and CCNB (Clay Coated News Back). On paper—pun intended—both can work. But in practice, they behave very differently.

Kraft paper has that natural, earthy look that consumers associate with sustainability. It's strong, tear-resistant, and generally more environmentally friendly if sourced from certified suppliers. But it's also harder to print on. The irregular fiber structure means ink absorption can be uneven, and getting consistent color reproduction requires more attention—and often more passes on the press. I've seen plenty of projects where the brand's logo came out looking slightly washed out or patchy, and that's not a great first impression.

CCNB, on the other hand, offers a smoother surface and better print quality. Colors pop more, fine details are crisper, and the overall look feels more polished. But it's also heavier, and the clay coating adds to the carbon footprint. Plus, some consumers are starting to recognize the look as "less natural." So there's a trade-off between visual performance and brand perception.

The Hidden Cost of Choosing the Wrong Substrate

Cost is always a factor, but the real cost isn't always the price per sheet. It's what happens downstream. If your substrate doesn't perform well with your chosen printing method, you'll face higher waste rates, more reprints, and longer changeover times.

I worked with a snack company that decided to go with a lower-cost paperboard to save 8% on material costs. On paper, it was a smart move. But within two months, their defect rate jumped by 12%. The board was too porous for the ink system they were using, causing bleeding and registration issues. They ended up spending more on reprints and remakes than they saved on materials.

The lesson here is simple: when you're thinking about how to design product packaging, don't just optimize for the price of the box. Think about the entire production chain. A slightly more expensive substrate that prints cleanly and runs smoothly can actually save you money in the long run.

How to Design Product Packaging That Balances Budget and Brand Impact

So where does that leave us? I've found that the best approach is to start with the end in mind. What shelf environmeant will this product live in? Who is the target shopper? What emotions are you trying to trigger? Once you have that clarity, the substrate and finish choices become more obvious.

For food products specifically, I often recommend a hybrid approach: use a standard or recycled paperboard for the main structure, but add a premium finish like spot UV on the logo or a soft-touch lamination on the top panel. This gives you the sustainability story and the tactile experience without the cost of using premium materials throughout. And if you're working with pakfactory, they have a range of substrates and finishes that allow exactly this kind of smart compromise.

At the end of the day, great packaging isn't about choosing the most expensive or the most sustainable option. It's about making intentional choices that align with your brand's values and your customers' expectations. And sometimes, the best design is the one that acknowledges trade-offs honestly rather than pretending they don't exist.
