Here's my opinion after nine years of handling packaging and print orders: the strongest adhesive isn't the safest packaging choice. The product that fits the real job is. Strong glue, strong tape, and waterproof patches are tools. They don't replace checking how a surface, coating, and shipping environment will behave together.
I learned that the expensive way. In 2017, I approved a 5,000-piece order of matte-coated cartons without verifying the label stock against the coating. The first batch of labels looked fine for a day, then lifted at the edges. My instinct was to recommend a stronger permanent label. It would have cost more and probably failed again.
Then my press vendor made a comparison: same carton, same label shape, three different adhesive formulations. Someone once asked me why their custom alligator wrapping paper looked soft. They had supplied a small web image and scaled it up to an 18-inch wrapping paper sheet. At that size, the file resolution was far below what the print job needed. The pattern looked fine on the screen because screens hide low resolution. It did not look fine in print.
For commercial print, the industry standard is 300 DPI at final size. Large-format posters can sometimes be printed at 150 DPI because they're viewed from farther away. Wrapping paper is handled up close, folded, and inspected. Envelope names cause endless confusion. A2, A6, #10, 6 by 9, 9 by 12—the name alone doesn't tell you whether an insert fits or where the flap sits. I keep a simple envelope size chart near my workspace.

The exact dimensions matter more than the name. If an insert is slightly too large for the envelope, it doesn't matter how strong the adhesive is or how beautiful the printing looks. The envelope won't run well through insertion equipment, and it can look sloppy to the recipient.
As for the question what does an envelope look like, the production answer is simple: hold an envelope so the address faces you. That side is the front. Flip it over. The top flap is on the back. When a print file says back flap, it means the side the recipient sees after turning the envelope over. That orientation check prevents embarrassing mistakes.
But We Don't Have Time to Test Everything
I hear that objection a lot. But the math never works out in favor of skipping checks.
A quick adhesive test might take one hour. A reprint with the wrong label adhesive might take five days. Checking the DPI of an image takes one minute. Reworking an entire run of blurry wrapping paper takes a week. Measuring an envelope before printing takes ten seconds. Redesigning a mailer that doesn't fit costs much more.
After the third rejection in Q1 2024, I created a pre-production checklist. In the last 18 months, that checklist has caught 47 potential errors before the jobs went to press. Most were small. All of them would have created delays and wasted money if they had slipped through.
My experience is based on custom printed packaging and B2B print orders. I'm not talking about regulated food-contact packaging or medical device packaging, which need their own qualifications. But for ordinary corrugated boxes, labels, printed bags, and envelopes, the same habit applies: verify first.
Prevention Over Cure Is the Most Important Packaging Material
