At Sticker Giant, questions arrive daily. Some customers want to know how a giant sticker book is manufactured. Others are sourcing self-stick address labels or seasonal Christmas return address labels. And every now and then, someone lands on our site after searching how to delete labels in Gmail on a phone, which has nothing to do with pressure-sensitive stock, but it is a useful reminder that the word 'label' carries a lot of meaning.
The question we hear most, though, is simpler than it sounds: 'If I order a custom sticker book, what am I actually buying?' The honest answer involves a web of choices, from paper and adhesive to ink, lamination, die-cutting, and binding, and no single formula works for every project.
This guide walks through the production decisions that matter, based on what we have learned running a high-mix sticker and label line for the past twelve years. It is not a list of every technical spec. It is the practical stuff that affects your timeline, your budget, and whether the final product feels right in your hands.

Most of the sticker books we produce at Sticker Giant start with one of two printing technologies: digital inkjet or flexography. Flexo takes over when a design calls for long runs, heavy ink coverage, or a specific spot color that only a dedicated plate can deliver.
A typical 10-page sticker book is not printed as one continuous piece. Sheets are printed on a press, then passed through a converting line that applies adhesive, lamination, and kiss-cutting. The order of those steps changes the final feel. Print first, laminate later for a glossy surface. Print, die-cut, then laminate only the die-cut shapes if you want a softer book.
There is a common myth that digital printing is always cheaper below 1,000 copies and flexo is always cheaper above that. In practice, the crossover point moves depending on the number of colors, the substrate, and how much finishing the design requires. Substrate Compatibility
Paper choice is where most sticker book projects succeed or fail. The base sheet needs enough stiffness to survive being flipped by small hands, but not so much thickness that the book feels like a stack of boards. The tricky part is maintaining it across a long run. At Sticker Giant, we check every 500 sheets against a physical mock-up, not just a digital PDF. There is a trade-off between speed and quality that no one likes to talk about. A flexo press can run at 150 meters per minute, but at that speed, thin film labels and flimsy paper start to stretch. For sticker book stock, we hold the press at 90-100 m/min. That single decision cuts waste by more than half, and customers end up paying for sellable sheets, not scrap.
Short-Run Production
Short runs used to be a pain point for sticker buyers. Most converters had minimums of 5,000 sheets because plate costs and setup time made smaller quantities uneconomical. Digital printing changed that. Today, a customer can order 500 giant sticker books with personalized names on the cover, and the job still makes sense.
The real challenge with short runs is not printing; it is finishing. A digital press can image a different cover on every sheet, but the die-cutter still needs a little time to adjust. We handle this by grouping orders with the same trim size. It sounds obvious, but a surprising number of shops lose two hours per order simply because they re-set the cutter for every job.
For our production team, a 'short run' at Sticker Giant is anything under 2,000 units. These jobs represent about 60% of our volume. A flexo press can produce the same sheet in 4 seconds, but with a 30-minute setup for plates, ink, and registration. So for a 500-sheet job, digital is faster in total hours. For a 10,000-sheet job, flexo overtakes it by a wide margin, assuming the artwork is final.
The question we ask every customer is not which technology is better. It is what your supply chain rewards. If you value last-minute changes, low minimums, and inventory flexibility, digital fits. If you have a stable design and a clear sales forecast, flexo can lower your cost per piece enough to fund a larger marketing campaign. Both are valid; the wrong choice is the one that ignores your actual sales cycle.
