Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Tape Is a Category, Not a Product: 3M Adhesives, Loctite Manual Applicators, and the Duct Tape Question

Posted on Friday 14th of August 2026

  • How to Decide Which Scenario You’re In
  • A Final Note on Claim Checking

Every few weeks I get a message that just says: “Need tape for sign.” Or: “Does CVS have duct tape? We need something strong.”

It took me about three years and maybe 150 purchase orders to understand that “tape” is not a product. It’s a category. The right adhesive depends on what you’re sticking, where it has to stay stuck, and who is actually applying it. So let me walk through the scenarios I see most as the person who orders supplies for a mid-size facility.

There’s no universal answer here. There’s just the right answer for your current job.

Scenario 1: The Rear-View Mirror That Needs to Stay Attached

This is the order I never want to skip. If a vehicle needs a rear-view mirror replaced, the proper fix is an adhesive designed for glass-to-metal bonding. 3M High Bond Rear View Mirror Adhesive is the kind of product you should be looking for. It is not a tube of glue to squeeze on a cold windshield.

The prep matters more than the adhesive. Clean the glass, apply the activator, let the solvent flash, then mount the mirror and wait for the cure time. I once watched a technician skip the activator because the car was needed in two hours. Two days later, the mirror was on the floor of the garage. Replacement cost: mirror, labor, adhesive, and a very unhappy safety manager.

That’s when the “five-minute check” became my rule. It took one failure to prove it: 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.

Scenario 2: Abrasive Discs That Need a Clean Hold

Feathering discs are a different situation. These are used in body repair and sanding, and the adhesive has to hold the disc to the pad without transferring residue. 3M Feathering Disc Adhesive does that job. It’s a contact adhesive, not a general-purpose glue.

When I compared using the correct disc adhesive against a leftover can of aerosol adhesive, the difference was clear. The generic spray made the disc slip and gummed up the backup pad. The correct product gave a clean, predictable hold. The generic spray was cheaper per gram, but the total cost—cleaning, replacement discs, wasted time—was higher.

Before ordering, I check three things: disc diameter, backing pad material, and working temperature. Most feathering disc adhesives have limits. The data sheet tells the truth.

Scenario 3: Banners, Signs, and the CVS Duct Tape Question

Banners are where “tape” requests turn into confusion. If you need to hang a paper sign for two hours in a breakroom, a cheap roll of duct tape from the store is fine. People ask me all the time: Does CVS have duct tape? Yes—most CVS stores carry duct tape in the home or office aisle. It’s a small roll, but it works for temporary around-the-building fixes.

But for an outdoor vinyl banner that has to survive wind and sunlight, household duct tape is the wrong tool. I use 3M banner adhesive—a tape or adhesive made for flexible sign materials and temperature swings. It holds without leaving a sticky mess when the banner finally needs to come down. I’ve seen duct tape hold for about a week on a storefront banner. The 3M banner adhesive was still holding when the banner was replaced a month later.

So yes, CVS has duct tape. But “has duct tape” doesn’t mean “has the right adhesive.”

Scenario 4: Approved Catalogs and Contracted SKUs

Finally, there’s the scenario where you can’t just choose what you like. If you work for a university, public agency, or large company, you may be tied to an approved catalog. The K-State Catalog is a good example of this—a university procurement catalog that lists contracted items and preferred vendors.

Last year our maintenance crew asked for a Loctite Manual Cartridge Applicator. I found the same-looking applicator on another site for $12 less. The upside was small savings. The risk was a rejected invoice because the purchased part wasn’t from the contracted source. I kept asking myself: is $12 worth a two-week paperwork mess? No. Honestly, the $12 wasn’t worth the phone call with finance.

The applicator itself is basically a frame that pushes a plunger into a standard cartridge. But “standard” is the tricky word. A Loctite Manual Cartridge Applicator is designed for specific cartridge sizes. Check that before you order.

Even after I ordered from the correct vendor, I second-guessed the choice. What if the crew wanted the other model? I didn’t relax until the applicator arrived and the cartridges clicked into place.

The lesson is simple: check the catalog first. If the K-State Catalog (or your agency’s equivalent) specifies a particular Loctite Manual Cartridge Applicator, buy that one. Don’t make your own list of approved vendors.

How to Decide Which Scenario You’re In

If you’re not sure, work through the decision tree:

  1. Is it a safety-critical part? If it’s a rear-view mirror, use the specified 3M High Bond Rear View Mirror Adhesive. Do not duct-tape it.
  2. Is it a sanding or finishing job? Use 3M Feathering Disc Adhesive and verify the disc/pad compatibility.
  3. Is the banner going to stay up for more than a day? Choose a 3M banner adhesive, not a roll of CVS duct tape.
  4. Do you have an approved vendor list? Look at the K-State Catalog or your own contract catalog before ordering any applicator, including a Loctite Manual Cartridge Applicator.

This might feel like overthinking a box of tape. But I’d rather spend five minutes verifying than spend a week correcting someone else’s shortcut. That’s the part that saves the budget.

A Final Note on Claim Checking

When I evaluate a new adhesive, I read the technical data sheet and look for test data. Per FTC business guidance on advertising (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), claims have to be substantiated. I apply the same standard to vendor claims: show me the numbers, not just the word “strongest.”

After five years of ordering adhesives, I’ve come to believe that most failures are plan failures, not product failures. The right product, applied the right way, is almost boringly reliable. That’s exactly what you want.

So the next time someone asks, “Does CVS have duct tape?” the real question is: does duct tape actually solve your problem? If not, call procurement.
