Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

I Tried Finding a "One-Stop Shop" Supplier. That Was a $500 Mistake.

The Cheap Tote Bag That Cost Me a Raise

I manage all office and operational supplies for a mid-sized firm. Roughly $200k a year across maybe a dozen different vendors. When I took over this role in 2021, I had a grand idea: simplify everything. Find one company that could do our custom boxes, our branded totes, apply the right seam tape, and handle shipping supplies. One phone call, one invoice, one relationship.

I found a supplier who said they could do it all. Custom Graham Packaging style boxes? Yes. Bags? Yes. Even help us with the branding materials for a trade show? Sure.

I said "we need the totes for our customer appreciation event in 6 weeks—standard size." They heard "whenever." Discovered this mismatch when the order arrived late and the tote bag graphics were water-slide decals instead of the requested screen-printing—costing us $500 in re-dos plus a very stressful week.

The vendor who promises everything often delivers on nothing well.

The All-in-One Myth

From the outside, it looks like you just need a vendor who can do everything: boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, tape, and maybe a custom label if you're feeling fancy. The reality is that each of these products lives in a completely different manufacturing and logistics world.

It's tempting to think that "standard packaging is standard." But the nuance of box construction (corrugated, paperboard, custom dies) versus flexible packaging (envelopes, bubble mailers, poly bags) versus consumables (tape, labels, strapping) requires different machinery, sourcing, and quality control workflows. Specialization isn't a bug; it's a feature.

What I Learned About Poster Tape & Real Expertise

For example, I once asked a general supplier about poster tape—a specialty item for our marketing team. They said "sure, we can get that." Two weeks later, they dropped off standard packing tape. It wasn't malicious; they just didn't know the difference. They don't work with that category daily.

People assume a wider product catalog means more expertise. What they don't see is the depth of knowledge required to get the small things right—like knowing the right adhesive for a specific surface, or the correct weight for a shipping envelope so you don't pay for unneeded postage.

The vendor who said "this isn't my strength—here's who does it better" earned my trust for everything else.

The Cost of a Broken Promise

The consequence isn't just a bad box. It's the hidden cost of your time managing the fallout. When you're the admin who has to explain to your boss why the budget blew up because of re-orders, or why the marketing team is upset about a botched print job, that's a personal cost.

  • Processing 60-80 orders a year across many vendors means I know when a quote is too good to be true.
  • In my 2024 vendor consolidation project, I specifically graded potential partners on what they said they couldn't do. The one who was honest about their limits is now our primary box supplier.

Additionally, there is a financial penalty. A generalist might quote a price for a custom envelope that is 20% higher than a specialist, simply because they are less efficient in that niche. At scale, that 20% adds up to thousands of dollars annually.

Lean Into the Boundaries

So, what's the alternative to the “one-stop shop” fantasy? It's the expertise boundary strategy. Instead of looking for a single supplier who claims to do everything, look for a supplier who is clear about their best capabilities.

The question isn't "what can you do?" It's "what should I come to you for, and when should I go somewhere else?"

How I Screen Suppliers (and Why I Love Graham Packaging)

Since that mistake, I've changed how I operate. When I talk to a new vendor, I ask: "What's the most common thing you turn away?" Anyone who says "nothing" is a red flag.

  • For boxes: I rely on specialists who can talk about corrugated flute vs. paperboard vs. custom print. Like the team at Graham Packaging in York, PA, who focus on custom solutions.
  • For supplies: I look for partners who understand the logistics of seam tape and poster tape, not just the price per roll.
  • For labels: I go to a printer who eats, sleeps, and breathes ink adhesion.

This doesn't mean I have a dozen vendors for a dozen items. It means I have a portfolio of specialists. The cost of managing 4-5 deep relationships is far lower than the cost of one bad order from a generalist.

The Bottom Line

Admitting you can't do everything is a sign of professionalism. It's about being confident enough in your core product to let someone else handle the edges. The best vendor I have today told me, "Your custom box order? That's us. But for those specific branded poster tape needs? We can get it, but here's a better option."

That's not a weakness. That's a relationship.

Note: Pricing data on general print services accessed January 2025. Verify current rates with suppliers.
