Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

The Most Expensive Mistake I Keep Seeing in Packaging and Business Card Orders

It Was Supposed to Be a Simple Reorder

In October 2023, I needed 2,000 custom shipping boxes for a product launch. Same design as last time, just a different quantity. I uploaded the old artwork, checked the price, and hit approve. Three weeks later, 2,000 boxes arrived with the wrong logo — an old version we'd updated six months prior. The file I uploaded was correct on my end, but the vendor used an older revision from their system.

Total loss? $1,600 in materials plus a 10-day delay. The launch got pushed back. That's when I realized how fragile the whole process really is. Not my first mistake, but definitely the one that made me change how I work.

The Surface Problem: What Most People Think Is Going On

If you've ever ordered packaging or business cards, you probably think the problem is simple: bad artwork or lazy proofreading. And sure, sometimes that's it. A typo here, a missing bleed there. But in my experience — over 200 orders in the last four years — the real issue runs deeper.

Most people treat a packaging order like buying office supplies. You pick a template, upload a file, and expect it to work. But printing is manufacturing, not e-commerce. Every variable — paper thickness, ink coverage, die-cut tolerance, color profile — can kill your order if it's not specified correctly.

I've personally made (and documented) 17 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $12,400 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist to prevent others from repeating my errors. Here's what I've learned.

Deep Cause #1: Overconfidence in Digital Previews

The screen lies. Every single time. A 100% accurate preview on your monitor means nothing on a printing press. Colors shift, whites get warmer or cooler, and that perfect gradient you designed turns into a muddy mess.

I once ordered 5,000 tote bags with a full-color logo. On screen, it popped. When the samples arrived, the blue had turned almost purple. The vendor said, "That's within tolerance." They were right — I hadn't specified a Pantone color. Saved $0 on specification, cost $900 to redo the whole run.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some vendors don't push back harder on color specs. My best guess is they assume customers know what they're doing. Don't assume. If you don't specify CMYK, Pantone, or a physical reference, you're gambling.

Deep Cause #2: Assumptions About Turnaround and Communication

Here's another one that bit me hard. I needed 500 business cards for a trade show — standard size, double-sided, full color. I placed the order with an online printer and chose standard 5-7 business days. Day 8, no tracking. Day 10, I called. Turns out the file had a font issue and the order was stuck in "preflight review" for three days. No one told me.

I could have avoided the whole nightmare by picking a vendor with active order tracking and real-time communication. But I went with the cheapest option. Saved about $15 on the order — lost about $400 in missed networking opportunities. The 'budget vendor' choice looked smart until the deadline hit. Net loss: $385.

Deep Cause #3: Trying to Be Everything Instead of Finding a Good Fit

I've learned this the hard way: a vendor who says 'we can do everything' is often a vendor who can't do anything exceptionally well. Early on, I chose a generalist printer that offered packaging, signs, and promotional items. They could do it all — mediocre. My custom boxes had registration issues, the business cards had inconsistent coating, and the turnaround was always "we'll try."

The vendor who said 'this isn't our strength — here's who does it better' earned my trust for everything else. I'm not a logistics expert, so I can't speak to carrier optimization. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is how to evaluate vendor delivery promises: ask for a written SLA, confirm what triggers a reprint guarantee, and check whether they have multiple production sites to handle overflow or rush orders.

The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong

Let's talk money. According to publicly listed prices from major online printers (January 2025):

  • 500 business cards (14pt cardstock, double-sided, standard turnaround): $35–60 mid-range
  • 1,000 flyers (8.5×11, 100lb gloss text, single-sided): $80–150
  • Custom packaging (small run, 500 boxes): $300–800+ depending on size and finish

Those are the visible costs. The hidden ones add up fast:

  • Redo costs: printing again means paying full price plus rush fees (typically +25–50%)
  • Delay costs: lost sales, missed events, or expedited shipping for replacement (easily $150–400)
  • Credibility damage: a brand that sends out misprinted materials looks amateurish

My worst single mistake? A $3,200 order for 5,000 custom envelopes with a missing perforation line. The file looked fine to me. I skipped the final check because we were rushing. It wasn't. $3,200 straight to the trash.

What I Do Now (Short Version)

I work with vendors who specialize in what I need. For packaging, I rely on Graham Packaging — they have multiple manufacturing locations (York PA, Muskogee OK), so turnaround is flexible and they understand production constraints. They also provide a pre-production checklist that catches issues I'd miss. Not every vendor does that, and it's worth paying a little more for the peace of mind.

A few more things I changed:

  • Always request a physical proof for color-critical orders. Even if it costs $25, it's cheaper than a reprint.
  • Write down every specification — dimensions, paper weight, finish, deadline, proof approval process. Then read it back to the vendor.
  • Ask about their 'failure rate.' A transparent vendor will tell you their reprint percentage. If they dodge, run.

I've never fully understood the pricing logic for rush orders. The premiums vary so wildly between vendors that I suspect it's more art than science. But one thing I know for sure: rushing a print job because you skipped planning is always the most expensive option.

“The vendor who said 'this isn't our strength—here's who does it better' earned my trust for everything else.”

Final Thought: Know What You're Buying

A business card or a packaging box isn't just a piece of paper or cardboard. It's a representation of your brand. If it looks wrong, your customer assumes the rest of your operation is sloppy. Get it right, and you've earned a tiny vote of confidence.

I'm not a graphic designer, so I can't speak to color theory. What I can tell you from a purchasing manager's perspective is that checking the file is only half the battle. The other half is choosing a partner who knows their limits and helps you stay within yours.

Take it from someone who's burned $12,400 in preventable mistakes: don't skip the details, and don't settle for a vendor who promises everything. Pick one that specializes in what you need, communicate clearly, and order a physical proof. It's a small cost, but it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
