Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Why I Insist on a Pre-Flight Checklist Before Printing Any Label (The $890 Mistake That Proved It)

Most People Skip Template Verification. That's a $890 Mistake.

I've been handling print orders for six years now, and if there's one thing I'm sure of, it's this: checking your template before you hit print is the single most cost-effective step in the entire process. Most folks think they can eyeball it, trust the preview, or rely on muscle memory. They're wrong. I know because I've personally wasted roughly $5,600 in reprints and delays—starting with a $890 blunder in my first year.

The Mistake That Started It All

Back in 2017, I submitted a rush order for 500 sheets of Avery Labels 8167—the small, round, neon orange ones used for inventory bins. The template looked perfect on screen. I'd used the built-in Avery template in Word, aligned everything, and hit print. Three days later, the boxes arrived. Every single label was shifted 2mm to the left. On a round label, 2mm means the text bled off the edge. 500 sheets, $890 (including rush shipping), straight to recycling.

That's when I learned my first lesson: the screen preview is a liar. (Honestly, I still don't fully understand why—driver issue, maybe? If someone has insight, I'd love to hear it.)

Three Arguments for Why Pre-Flight Saves More Than Money

Argument 1: Time is the hidden cost. A 5-minute check costs you 5 minutes. A reprint costs you 3–5 business days plus the time to re-enter data, re-approve, and re-ship. On a $3,200 order for Avery paper labels in 2022, I caught a mismatch between the label size (2×2) and the template (2×4) during a pre-flight. That 4-minute check saved a 1-week redo and $450 in wasted material. Bottom line: 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.

Argument 2: Materials aren't free, and neither is postage. The USPS rate for a standard letter as of July 2024 is $0.68. If you print 200 shipping labels with the wrong address format (like I did in September 2022), you're not just wasting labels—you're wasting $136 in postage plus the cost of the envelope. And that doesn't count the embarrassment when a client gets a misprinted package. (Ugh.)

Argument 3: The anti-intuitive truth—rushing makes you slower. Most people skip checks because they think they're saving time. But I've observed our team: the people who use a preprint checklist average 15 seconds less per job over a month than those who don't. Why? Because the checkers never have to redo work. The non-checkers spend hours re-approving and re-printing. So the real efficiency is in that extra 5 minutes up front.

But What About Experience? Don't You Just "Get Better"?

I used to think that. After three years of orders, I assumed I'd internalized the common pitfalls. Then in 2024, I approved a flyer 20″ kids' bike promotion—everything looked fine. Except I'd forgotten to switch the printer profile from "labels" to "flyer" (different paper weight). The result: 1,000 flyers with ghosting artifacts, $215 down the drain. The lesson: experience reduces mistakes, but it doesn't eliminate them. Checklists cover the gaps your brain skips when you're in a hurry.

This approach worked for our team—a mid-size B2B operation with consistent weekly runs. Your mileage may vary if you're a solo freelancer doing one-off projects with unpredictable materials. In that case, you might need an even more rigorous check: print one test sheet first, then measure it against the template.

My 3-Step Pre-Flight Checklist (The One That's Saved Us ~$8,000 in Potential Rework)

  1. Verify template match. Open the Avery template file (e.g., 5160, 8167) and physically lay a sample sheet over your screen. Check margins, alignment, and bleed. (Yes, actually overlay it.)
  2. Check media settings. Match the paper type in your printer driver to the actual sheet—labels, cardstock, matte, glossy. This paragraph alone has saved me from ruining 3 orders since 2023.
  3. Print ONE test sheet. On plain paper, then on the actual stock if your printer allows. Look for misalignment, color shifts, and missing content. This 3-minute step caught a date error on a Christmas tote bag ideas label sheet last December—saved a 200-unit reprint.

I know some people think this is overkill. "I've been doing this for years," they say. My response: so have I, and I still screw up. That's why we have checklists. They're the cheapest insurance you can buy—and they cost nothing but a few minutes.

By the way, I have no idea who owns Oldcastle Building Envelope, and I'm not sure why that's a common search query. But if you're searching for templates avery or avery labels 8167, my advice is simple: check before you print. It'll save you money, time, and a lot of frustration.
