Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

The Day Our Shipping Room Became a Cardboard Fortress

It was a Tuesday in late October 2023. Our company had just finished a product launch, and the shipping room looked like a cardboard bomb went off. I mean—boxes everywhere. Standard shipping boxes, odd-sized ones, a few that didn't fit anything we actually sold. Our regular vendor had over-shipped again, and I was staring at a pile of corrugated waste that would take two dumpster runs to clear.

Honestly, I was fed up. I manage ordering for about 400 employees across three locations in Terre Haute. My annual packaging spend runs roughly $12,000 across 8 vendors. And from the outside, it looks like I just need to order better. The reality is planning accurate box quantities is nearly impossible when your product mix shifts seasonally—that's the part nobody sees.

That's when I first seriously looked into Boxup. I'd seen their ads for rental packaging, but I figured it was just a gimmick. I was wrong.

Why I Almost Stuck with My Old Vendor

To be fair, my regular supplier (let's call them Standard Supply Co.) had been reliable for years. Their pricing was competitive—about $2.50 per box for our standard 12x10x8—and they delivered within 3-4 business days. But the waste was killing me. We'd over-order by 15-20% just to cover variability, and then we'd throw away the extras.

I get why people stick with what they know. Change is risk. But in our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I had to justify every line item. The finance team asked: "Why are we buying boxes we don't use?" And I didn't have a good answer.

So I started researching Boxup. Their model is simple: rent reusable boxes, pay per use, return when done. No inventory waste.

My experience is based on about 50 orders with Boxup over the last 5 months. If you're working with high-volume, standardized packaging needs, your mileage might vary. But for us—a mid-sized distributor with unpredictable volume—it was a game-changer.

The First Order: Where I Nearly Messed Up

I placed our trial order on November 6th. 100 rental boxes for a client fulfillment push. The website was straightforward—basically I selected size, quantity, and delivery window. Total came to $180, which included delivery and collection fees. No hidden setup charges, which I double-checked.

But here's where I almost blew it: I didn't verify the return process. I'd assumed we could just leave the emptied boxes in the shipping room for pickup. Turns out, Boxup requires consolidated stacks—flattened and bundled—for efficient collection. Our team wasn't trained for that.

Looking back, I should have requested a 15-minute walkthrough with their local rep in Terre Haute. At the time, the promotional deal ($20 off first order) was expiring, so I rushed. In hindsight, the savings were small compared to the hassle of re-training the crew.

But honestly? Boxup's customer support sorted it fast. They sent a quick PDF guide, and we had it under control within 24 hours. Not a deal-breaker, just a learning curve.

The Unexpected Benefit: Inventory Visibility

People assume rental packaging just means less waste. What I didn't expect was better tracking. Boxup's online portal shows exactly how many boxes you have on-site, how many are due for return, and the invoice for each cycle. That alone saved our accounting team maybe 6 hours a month in reconciling shipments.

Standard Supply Co. couldn't provide that. Their system relied on paper packing slips and manual counts.

Boxup also publishes their pricing upfront. As of January 2025, standard rental boxes for our size run $1.20 per use (includes delivery and collection). That's about half what we were paying to buy—but you don't own them. For our use case, the per-use cost is way lower than buying and disposing.

I should note: this pricing was accurate as of Q4 2024. The packaging market changes fast, so verify current rates before budgeting.

When It Didn't Work: The Exception That Proves the Rule

I'm not saying Boxup is perfect. We had one order in December—right before the holidays—where our box size didn't match the product dimensions exactly. The rental box was slightly too tall for our shirt packaging, so we had to add void fill, which defeated some of the waste-reduction goal.

The assumption is that a rental service means one-size-fits-all. The reality is Boxup offers a limited range of standard sizes—if your product is oddly shaped, you might be better off buying custom boxes from a specialist. That's not Boxup's fault; it's a boundary of their model.

The vendor who says "this isn't our strength—here's who does it better" earned my trust for everything else. Boxup's rep told me straight up: "For non-standard sizes, I'd recommend going with a local printer." That honesty made me trust them for our standard needs even more.

Bottom Line for Terre Haute Businesses

If you're in Terre Haute and managing packaging for a small-to-midsize company, Boxup is a no-brainer for standard shipping boxes. The cost savings are real—about 40-50% per order versus buying and throwing away. The local delivery (they have a depot in Terre Haute) means no long lead times. And the inventory tracking is a nice bonus.

But don't expect them to handle every odd-size need. That's not their game. They're good at what they do: reusable, standard boxes for predictable shipping.

Had I known all this a year ago, I'd have switched sooner. But given what I knew then—only the marketing hype—I made a reasonable decision to start small. Now I'm planning to move 70% of our packaging volume to Boxup by mid-2025. The other 30%? Specialist suppliers for custom sizes.

And that stack of cardboard boxes from our old supplier? Finally gone.
