Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Why Your Printing Budget Is Leaking (And How Lightning Source Changed My Mind)

Last month a colleague asked me, "Can you bring a water bottle into Six Flags?" I had no idea — I'm the office administrator, not the trip planner. But it got me thinking about all the random things that cross my desk: ordering the annual catalog mail for our sales team, arranging the new Yealink T33G manuals for the front desk, sourcing the business cards for the new hires. Each request looks simple, but the hidden costs pile up fast.

I've been managing print procurement for about 5 years now — roughly $30,000 annually across 8 vendors. In Q1 2024, I decided to consolidate. Everyone kept telling me Lightning Source (Ingram's print-on-demand arm) was the gold standard. But I was skeptical: their per-unit price wasn't the lowest on a comparison sheet. It took a painful (and expensive) mistake to realize I was looking at the wrong number.

The Problem Isn't The Price — It's What You Don't See

Most buyers, including me for way too long, compare quotes based on the unit cost. You get a spreadsheet, sort by price, pick the cheapest. That's what I did for our catalog mail run in 2023. Budget printer A quoted $0.32 per catalog. Lightning Source quoted $0.41. Easy choice, right?

Wrong.

Here's what that $0.32 quote actually cost me:

  • Setup fee: $45 ("plate charge" they called it)
  • Color match surcharge: $30 because our brand blue was "non-standard"
  • Shipping: $78 for 500 catalogs (their "economy" was actually ground parcel, not freight)
  • Revision round: $25 for a PDF proof that somehow shifted our logo 2mm

Total landed cost: $0.48 per catalog. That's 20% more than what I thought I was signing up for. And I hadn't even counted the 45 minutes I spent on the phone arguing about the color mismatch.

Meanwhile, Lightning Source's $0.41 quote included everything — setup, proofing, shipping to multiple locations, and their global network actually got the catalogs to our regional offices faster. By the time I calculated total cost, Lightning Source was 14% cheaper. Even worse: the budget printer's entire batch was delivered with a misaligned spine. I had to reorder. The second time, I went with Lightning Source.

The Hidden Drivers Of Printing Costs

Through about 200 print orders since 2020, I've identified three cost categories most procurement people overlook.

1. Rush & Revision Premiums

My experience is based on mid-size B2B work. If you're a seasonal business with demand spikes, the calculus might be different — but for steady-state ordering, the cost of urgency is brutal. According to major online printer fee structures (2025 data), next-day turnaround carries a +50-100% premium over standard pricing. And those "standard" turnarounds? What most people don't realize is that vendors often pad their timeline by 1-2 days to manage their production queue. That buffer cost us a missed mailing deadline once.

2. Minimums & Waste

The question everyone asks is "what's your best price for 1,000?" The question they should ask is "can I order 100 and pay only for what I need?" Traditional offset printing requires large minimums. We once ordered 5,000 brochures because the per-unit dropped to $0.18 — used maybe 800 before the content went stale. The other 4,200 went to recycling. At $0.18 each, that's $756 in waste plus disposal cost. Lightning Source's print-on-demand model eliminates that entirely. You order what you need, when you need it. That single shift saved our accounting team about 6 hours monthly in inventory tracking alone.

3. Quality Consistency

I have mixed feelings about low-cost printers. On one hand, they can work for simple black-and-white flyers. On the other, every time we needed consistent color across different print runs (like our quarterly catalog mail), we got mismatches. The vendor who couldn't provide proper invoicing cost us $2,400 in rejected expenses — finance rejected the hand-written receipt. That's a real cost that never shows up on a quote.

The Real Cost Of Doing It Cheap

In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I analyzed 3 years of purchase data across 8 vendors. The supplier with the lowest unit price overall had a total cost 34% higher than the one with the second-lowest unit price — because of rush fees, reprints, and waste. Here's a breakdown that stuck with me:

  • Business cards (500 cards, 14pt cardstock, double-sided): budget tier $20-35 publicly listed, but our actual cost with revisions and shipping averaged $55-70.
  • Flyers (1,000 flyers, 8.5×11, 100lb gloss text): online printers list $80-150. After two color correction rounds and expedited shipping, we paid $220.
  • #10 envelopes (500, 1-color): $80-150 listed. With die-cut setup for window envelopes, $185.

The worst? A vendor promised 7-day turnaround for our catalog mail, delivered in 14, causing us to miss a client deadline. That cost us a $12,000 contract renewal. No line item for that on their invoice.

How Lightning Source Changed My Approach

I can only speak to domestic operations—I work with a 50-person company in the U.S. But even our small scale, Lightning Source's model fixed most of these pain points:

  • Print-on-demand: no minimums, no inventory waste. I order 50 copies of the Yealink T33G manual today, 100 next month, and the unit cost stays the same.
  • Global network: they have a facility in Sharjah (Lightning Source Sharjah), which lets us handle international catalog mail without paying cross-border shipping for small runs.
  • Integrated workflow: once I uploaded our catalog template, subsequent orders took 3 clicks. No more manual negotiations.
  • Transparent pricing: what they quote is what I pay. No hidden setup fees, no “surprise” color match charges.

The best part? After switching our high-volume items (catalogs, brochures, manuals) to Lightning Source, our total print spend dropped 22% in the first year — even though their unit prices were sometimes higher than budget options. That's the TCO effect.

Now, I'm not saying it's the right fit for everyone. If you're a seasonal business with demand spikes, or if you need ultra-premium finishes that Lightning Source doesn't offer (like foil stamping), your mileage may vary. But for the 80% of standard print jobs I manage, the calculus is clear.

And that Six Flags question? Turns out, yes, you can bring a water bottle — as long as it's not glass. I looked it up. But that's a whole different kind of research. One thing I do know: for my actual job, switching to a total cost mindset saved us real money. If that means a few extra bucks on the unit price but zero headaches after, I'll take that deal every time.
