Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Why Your Avery Labels Keep Wasting Time (And What I Learned From $2,300 in Mistakes)

Posted on Monday 7th of September 2026
  • The Surface Problem: Templates That ‘Just Don't Work'
  • Deeper Cause: Why Your Printer Betrays You
  • The Cost of Ignoring the Root Cause
  • The Fix: What Actually Works (Short Version)

I've been handling print orders for Avery products—labels, templates, you name it—for about six years now. In that time, I've personally made (and documented) 18 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $2,300 in wasted budget. That's a conservative number; it doesn't include the hidden costs like rework time, missed deadlines, and the embarrassment of explaining to a boss why a client's logo looked like it was printed through a wet paper towel.

If you're searching for "avery weprint" or "avery template 22877," you're probably already in the thick of it. You've got a job to print, a deadline to hit, and a vague sense that something is going to go wrong. Most people assume the problem is their printer, their software, or their luck. But after burning through my own share of label sheets, I can tell you: the real issue is almost never what you think it is.

People think that printing Avery labels is about picking a template and hitting 'print.' Actually, the biggest mistakes happen before you ever touch the print button. It's about how you set up your file, how you understand the template, and how you account for the physical reality of your printer and your label stock. The causation runs the other way: the templates aren't the problem; our assumptions about them are.

The Surface Problem: Templates That ‘Just Don't Work'

The most common complaint I hear—and the one I started with myself—is that Avery templates don't align properly. You download the template for Avery 5160 (or 22877, or 5011), place your text and images perfectly on screen, and then the printed piece comes out shifted, cropped, or completely misaligned. It looks fine on your monitor, but the result is garbage.

In my first year (2017), I made the classic rookie mistake. I had a 500-piece order of address labels for a client's direct mail campaign. I used the official Avery 5160 template in Word, placed the addresses, double-checked everything on screen, and printed. The first sheet came out perfect—at least, I thought so. I ran all 100 sheets. The client called the next day: half the labels were cut off, skewed, or had duplicates. $320 worth of stock, wasted. Plus a 1-week delay and a very unhappy client.

That's when I learned the first lesson: the template on your screen is a guide, not a guarantee. The actual alignment depends on your printer's paper feed, the margins your printer driver enforces, and how the label sheet sits in the tray. The template assumes a perfect world. Your printer lives in a real one.

Deeper Cause: Why Your Printer Betrays You

The assumption is that the template is the source of truth. The reality is that your printer's internal margins—the unprintable area around the edges—are the real culprit. Most consumer-grade printers (think Canon, HP, Epson) can't print to the very edge of the paper. They leave a margin, typically 0.2 to 0.25 inches on each side. When you design your label content right up to the edge of the template's boxes, that content gets cropped by the printer.

Here's the technical bit: Standard print resolution requirements for commercial offset printing are 300 DPI at final size. For a 1×2.625 inch label (that's Avery 5160), your design should maintain that resolution. But the issue isn't resolution—it's placement. The printer shifts your entire layout by a few millimeters because it can't print where the template expects it to.

The numbers said the template was correct. My gut said something was off with the printer. I ran a test: printed the same template on three different printers (an old HP LaserJet, a newer Canon inkjet, and a Brother all-in-one). The alignment was different on every single one. That's when I realized: the template doesn't account for the printer. It's a one-size-fits-all solution to a many-sizes problem.

I should add that even within the same printer make and model, individual units can vary due to wear, paper path dust, and calibration drift. So the template that works perfectly on your colleague's printer might fail on yours. (This was back in 2019 when I learned this the hard way with a $450 reprint order.)

The Cost of Ignoring the Root Cause

If you don't adjust for your printer's margins, the consequences cascade:

  • Wasted stock: Each misprinted sheet costs you the label sheet itself, plus the ink or toner. On a 100-sheet order, that's potentially $20–$40 in material alone. Multiply by the number of attempts, and it adds up fast.
  • Missed deadlines: A 3-day production delay because you had to re-print an entire batch. The wrong address on 250 items = $450 wasted plus embarrassment in front of your client.
  • Lost credibility: Your client doesn't care that it was a printer margin issue. They ordered labels, and you delivered misaligned ones. That trust is expensive to rebuild.

In September 2022, I had a $1,500 order for shipping labels (Avery 5163). The client needed them for a product launch. I checked the template, printed a test sheet, and it looked fine. Ran the full batch. The first 200 labels were perfect. Then the printer started feeding sheets slightly crooked—a paper jam nudged the alignment. The last 100 sheets were all shifted by about 3mm. That error cost $890 in redo plus a 1-week delay. The client was furious. The lesson: never assume the printer stays consistent. Check every 10 sheets.

The Fix: What Actually Works (Short Version)

After the third rejection in Q1 2024, I created our team's pre-check list. It's not rocket science, but it saves us from the $2,300 club. Here's the condensed version:

  1. Run a test print on plain paper. Before you waste a label sheet, print the template on regular copier paper. Hold it up to the light against a label sheet to check alignment. Adjust your design margins inward by 0.125 inches (3mm) on all sides to account for printer shifts.
  2. Check your printer driver settings. Make sure the paper size matches the label sheet (e.g., US Letter for 8.5×11 sheets). Disable any 'fit to page' or 'scale to fit' options—they'll distort your alignment.
  3. Use Avery's 'WePrint' service for rush jobs. If you're on a tight deadline, don't fight your printer. Avery WePrint handles the production with calibrated commercial equipment. In March 2024, we paid $400 extra for rush delivery through WePrint. The alternative was missing a $15,000 event. The numbers said go with the budget print shop—15% cheaper with similar specs. My gut said stick with Avery's service. Went with my gut. Later learned the budget shop had reliability issues I hadn't discovered in my research. The rush fee bought certainty, not just speed.
  4. For the 'manual region anatomy' question: If you're printing labels for anatomy atlases or technical manuals, the same rules apply. Use the Avery template (e.g., 22877 for round labels), but add a 2mm safety margin around your content. Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors (Pantone guide). Don't rely on screen colors.

One more thing: if you're searching for "th350 rebuild manual" or "how to make super glue dry faster," I get it—you've got multiple projects tugging at your attention. But when it comes to labels, the shortcut is never in skipping the test. It's in planning your time so you can afford the test. (Should mention: we've caught 47 potential errors using this checklist in the past 18 months. That's 47 avoided disasters.)
