Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Acme Brick Cost Guide for Small Contractors: FAQ on Pricing, Locations, and Hidden Expenses

What makes Acme Brick a smart choice for projects in Abilene, Texas?

If you're working in Abilene, Texas, you've probably seen Acme Brick's yard on Highway 83. In my experience as a procurement manager for a mid-sized construction company (we run about $180K in materials annually), the local Acme supply house offers consistent quality and decent pricing—but only if you know how to negotiate. The key advantage is the wide selection of brick colors and textures, which saves you from paying extra freight from Dallas. Just remember: their quoted price often excludes delivery fees (which, honestly, can add $150-$300 depending on your job site).

How does Acme Block and Brick Chattanooga compare to other suppliers?

Chattanooga's Acme location is known for block and brick combos. When I audited our 2023 spending across 12 suppliers, Acme Chattanooga came out ahead on block pricing (about 8% lower than the next closest vendor). But don't let the base price blind you. Their minimum order for custom color blends is 500 bricks, and if you're a small crew just starting out, that's a lot. I've seen contractors get burned by ordering 499 bricks and having to pay a 'shortage fee' (surprise, surprise). The smart move? Ask for a TCO quote that includes pallet fees and any split-order charges.

How much does a garage door cost, and how does it affect your brick project budget?

You might be thinking, 'I'm here for brick, not garage doors.' But when you're planning a garage addition, the door cost is a major line item. As of early 2025, a standard 16x7 steel garage door installed runs $800–$1,500 (this was accurate as of Q4 2024; market changes fast). If you're also laying Acme Brick for the façade, that combo can eat 30-40% of your total budget. I learned this the hard way in 2022: we saved $200 on brick by choosing a cheaper blend, then blew $1,200 on garage door rework when the opener didn't fit the clearance we forgot to check. Net loss? About $1,000. So always run a full project cost spreadsheet before ordering.

Do I need adhesive remover for brick installation?

Short answer: yes, if you're using thin brick or stone veneers with mastic. Many DIYers assume they can skip the remover and just scrape off excess adhesive. That's a classic oversimplification. A $15 can of adhesive remover can save you hours of labor—and prevent damaging the brick face. When we switched to using a quality remover (methyl ethyl ketone based, around $20 per quart), our clean-up time dropped by 40%. Compared to the $400 redo we once had when dried adhesive ruined a whole wall, that $20 is nothing. Plus, if you're working with Acme's textured brick, the remover won't strip the color coating (which cheap solvents might).

Can a canister purge valve issue impact your construction timeline?

It sounds weird, but hear me out. If you're running a pickup truck or heavy equipment on-site, a faulty canister purge valve can trigger a check engine light and sudden performance loss. I've had a delivery delayed for two days because a driver's truck stalled due to a $40 valve. That lost time cost us $800 in crew downtime. So when you budget for your Acme Brick order, set aside maybe $100 for vehicle maintenance contingency. (Not that I'm saying every project will have this—just that I've seen it happen three times in the past six years.)

Are small orders treated fairly at Acme Brick?

Personally, I've found Acme Brick pretty good about small orders—especially if you walk in and talk to the yard manager. I once ordered just 200 bricks for a repair job, and they didn't tack on any 'small order fee.' In my opinion, that's a sign of a supplier who understands that today's small customer could be tomorrow's repeat buyer. However, if you're looking for less than a pallet (roughly 500 bricks), expect to pay a higher per-unit price. The trick is to ask: 'What's the best price you can do for a small project?' Some locations will split a pallet or let you buy loose bricks. Others won't. The Abilene location, for instance, let me pick singles from the scrap pile—saved me $30. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means you have to be smarter about procurement.
