Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

    • Q: Final thoughts — should I choose Greiner for my next packaging project?

Everything you wanted to know about Greiner packaging (and a few things you didn't know to ask)

I'm an office administrator for a mid-sized biotech company. I manage all our packaging and lab consumable ordering — roughly $150,000 annually across 12 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so I see the full picture: the specs, the invoices, and the occasional headache.

After 5 years of managing this, I've come to believe that the 'best' vendor is highly context-dependent. But I've also found that Greiner, specifically their packaging and Bio-One divisions, keeps coming up as a solid option in specific situations. Here's what I've learned.

Q: Why should I consider Greiner Packaging for my company?

A: It depends on what you're packaging. Greiner is strong in rigid plastic packaging — tubes, containers, and custom-molded parts. If you need something robust, with consistent quality across large runs, they're worth a look.

I've worked with them on a few projects, and the biggest advantage I saw wasn't the base price. It was the manufacturing consistency. When you're ordering hundreds of thousands of units, even a 0.5% defect rate adds up. Greiner's global footprint (they have facilities in Pittston, Monroe, and others) means they can also manage multi-site delivery, which saved our logistics team a ton of headaches.

Oh, and they're not cheap — but they're rarely the most expensive either. They sit in that 'reasonable premium' zone where you pay a bit more for reliability.

Q: What about Greiner Bio-One North America? Is that the same as Greiner Packaging?

A: Not exactly. Greiner Bio-One is a separate division focused on laboratory consumables — blood collection tubes, pipette tips, cell culture flasks, that sort of thing. They share the parent company's quality standards but operate as distinct business units.

If you're in diagnostics or life sciences, Bio-One is the division you want. I've ordered their tubes for our lab, and the quality control is impressive. But don't expect your packaging sales rep to handle Bio-One orders. They have separate teams, separate catalogs, and separate pricing.

The most frustrating part of dealing with them: figuring out which rep to call for a mixed order. It took me three calls to understand I needed two different contacts.

Q: How does Greiner handle bulk orders and delivery timelines?

If I remember correctly, standard lead times for custom packaging are around 4-6 weeks for a first order. For repeat orders on existing tooling, it's faster — maybe 2-3 weeks. But don't quote me on that; it varies by product and facility.

I will say their rush order process is better than most. We once had a client change specs at the last minute on a tube design, and Greiner turned around a revised sample in 5 business days. That kind of flexibility has real value when your client is breathing down your neck.

Your mileage may vary, of course. I'd recommend building in at least a week of buffer for any critical deadline.

Q: Can Greiner handle my specific product needs — say, custom colors or special finishes?

Yes, but with a caveat. Greiner is excellent at standard customizations: color matching, logo printing, specific volume markings. They're less suited for ultra-niche requirements like conductive plastics or extreme temperature resistance — at least, that's not their bread and butter.

Here's the thing: their sales team is generally honest about what they can and can't do. I've had reps point me toward competitors for products where they knew their solution wasn't the best fit. That honesty saved me time and money, even if it meant losing the sale. It's a refreshing change from vendors who say yes to everything and then fail to deliver.

Q: What's a hidden cost with Greiner that first-time buyers might miss?

Tooling. For custom molds or unique shapes, there's an upfront tooling cost that can be significant — think $5,000 to $20,000 depending on complexity. This is standard in the industry, but if you're used to off-the-shelf packaging, it can be a shock.

Spread over a large enough order, the per-unit cost becomes negligible. But if you're only ordering 10,000 units, the tooling amortization can kill your budget. I only believed this after ignoring a sales rep's warning and eating a $12,000 mistake on a low-volume custom tube run.

Q: Is Greiner packaging recyclable? I need to meet our sustainability targets.

Most of their standard plastic packaging is recyclable (typically PP or HDPE, depending on the product). They've also been investing in mono-material solutions to improve recyclability.

But — and this is important — 'recyclable' doesn't always mean 'recycled in practice.' Check your local facilities and confirm with their sustainability team. As of my last review in Q3 2024, they had a decent environmental report available on request, but it lacked the granularity some of our clients required.

If sustainability is a top priority, ask specific questions about post-consumer recycled content and end-of-life processing. Don't assume.

Q: Final thoughts — should I choose Greiner for my next packaging project?

I recommend Greiner if you need consistent, high-quality plastic packaging for medium to high volumes, and you value reliability over rock-bottom pricing. They're a great fit for regulated industries like pharma, biotech, and food where quality variance is not an option.

Consider alternatives if you need ultra-low cost for commodity packaging, extremely small quantities with custom tooling, or niche materials beyond their standard portfolio.

In short: Greiner won't be the cheapest quote on your desk, but it'll probably be the one that arrives on spec and on time. For a procurement manager with an operations team to keep happy, that's worth something.
