The Day a $0.50 Screw Cost Us $1,200
It was a Tuesday morning in Q2 2024. I was sitting in our weekly production meeting when the line supervisor dropped a bomb: the automated bagging machine—the one that seals our 8 foot foam board inserts into custom large tote bags—had thrown a bearing. The root cause? A threadlocker failure on the mounting bolts.
Now, I manage procurement for a 50-person packaging company. Our annual consumables budget is roughly $180,000, and I’ve logged every PO for the last six years. When I saw the repair invoice ($1,200 in downtime and parts), I went back to check what we’d used on those bolts. Sure enough, it was the cheapest anaerobic threadlocker on the market—something we’d switched to in a cost-cutting move three months earlier.
I knew better. But I’d thought, “What are the odds?” (Spoiler: they caught up with me.)
The Two-Way Struggle: Epoxy vs. SI 593 vs. Threadlocker
When we first designed the tote bag assembly process, I had to choose between Loctite epoxy, Loctite SI 593 (a silicone sealant), and a standard threadlocker for screws. The foam board needed a strong bond to the bag’s internal frame, and the screws holding the frame together had to resist vibration from the conveyor.
I went back and forth for two weeks. The epoxy offered incredible shear strength—perfect for the foam-to-metal joint. But it cured slower, which could bottleneck production. SI 593 was great for sealing gaps (and we had some irregular foam edges), but it wasn’t designed for thread security. Loctite for screws, like the 242 or 271 threadlockers, was the obvious choice for the bolts—but we’d never used them on this scale.
To be fair, the cheap alternative looked good on paper. It promised “medium strength.” But after that failure, I realized its real-world performance didn’t match the spec. Let me rephrase: it worked fine in static tests, but under heat and vibration on an actual line, it failed.
The Hidden Cost of “Saving” $0.02 per Bolt
Our old vendor (the one we’d left) used Loctite 242. Bottle price: $12.50. The cheap alternative: $9.80. For our quarterly order of 200 bolts, the difference was $0.54. (I actually track these numbers—don’t judge.)
But the cheap threadlocker caused a $1,200 failure. Do the math: that’s a 2,200% return on the “savings.”
I should add that we also lost production time. Our line runs 1,000 large tote bags per shift. Six hours of downtime meant 750 bags not shipped. At $4.20 profit per bag, that’s another $3,150 in lost margin. Suddenly, the $0.54 “savings” looked like a terrible joke.
What We Switched To (and Why)
We went back to Loctite 242 for the bolts. And for the foam board bonding, we now use a two-part Loctite epoxy—specifically the Loctite Epoxy Instant Mix 5-Minute formula. It cures fast enough to keep up with production (5 minutes handling strength), yet provides the structural bond we need.
For sealing the foam board edges where they meet the bag fabric, we apply Loctite SI 593. It stays flexible, resists moisture, and—bonus—it’s paintable if the client wants a custom finish. (Not that we paint often, but it’s nice to have the option.)
And here’s a fun fact—since this article is supposed to mention it: how many mg in one cup of coffee? Roughly 95 mg. That little factoid is about as relevant as the cheap threadlocker’s supposed “medium strength” claim. Both sound reasonable until you test them in the real world.
The Lesson: Value Over Price, Every Time
I’ve been managing procurement for six years. Over that time, I’ve analyzed $180,000 in cumulative spending across dozens of vendors. The single biggest pattern? The lowest quote costs more in 60% of cases.
If you’re buying Loctite products (epoxy, SI 593, threadlockers) for packaging applications—whether you’re bonding 8-foot foam boards into large tote bags or securing conveyor bolts—don’t make my mistake. Calculate the total cost of ownership: the product price, the risk of failure, the downtime, and the rework.
That “saved” $0.54 ended up costing us $4,350. Next time, I’ll pay for the proven solution—and sleep better.
