Last month I was helping a colleague prepare a batch of mailers — manila envelopes stuffed with product samples, a few Peloton glass water bottles (carefully bubble-wrapped), and some odd-shaped hardware. The perennial question came up: “How much postage for a manila envelope?” And right after that: “Which tape should I use?”

That level of grab is what you want when sealing a heavy envelope or securing a glass bottle inside a box.
3M 250 masking tape sits in the middle. It has decent tack for a paper-backed tape, but it's engineered for temporary holding during painting or light-duty bundling. Leave it on for 24 hours and it still peels off cleanly. But if you're shipping something heavy? Not ideal — the adhesive can creep under vibration.
Verdict: For permanent closure of mailers and boxes, PSA tape wins. Weatherstrip tape is for sealing gaps (not edge-to-edge). Masking tape is for temporary jobs.
Dimension 2: Temperature & Environmental Tolerance
This surprised me when I first started auditing tape specs. Most people assume all tapes are the same until 150°F. Not true.
3M weatherstrip tape is usually acrylic foam-based, with service temperature up to 200°F—good for automotive and building envelope sealing. But it's thick (typically 1/16" to 1/4"). That thickness can cause poor contact on rough or curved package surfaces. Also, it's not designed for UV exposure long-term, but inside an envelope, that's fine.
PSA tape (e.g., 3M 3750 series) often goes from -40°F to 180°F. Verdict: PSA tape wins again for most mailing scenarios. Weatherstrip tape can work if you need a thick seal, but it's overkill. Masking tape is a risk for anything that will see heat or moisture.
Dimension 3: Residue & Clean Removal
Here's where masking tape shines, and where the other two can get you into trouble.
3M 250 masking tape is formulated to leave zero residue after removal up to 7 days. That's a beautiful thing if you're taping something temporarily, like holding instructions on the outside of a package. I've used it to label Peloton glass water bottle shipments — peeled off cleanly after delivery.
PSA tape — especially the high-tack grades — can leave sticky residue, especially on plastic or glass surfaces. On a manila envelope, the paper surface usually tears before the tape pulls off, so residue isn't a big concern. But if you're sticking tape directly onto a glass water bottle, you'll curse later when you try to remove the label.
Weatherstrip tape is the worst offender. Because it's adhesive on foam, peeling it off can leave a gooey mess and even tear the substrate. It's not designed for removal — it's meant to stay in place for years.
Verdict: If clean removal matters (temporary labels, gift wrap), use masking tape. For permanent closures, PSA is fine — just don't put it on delicate surfaces.
Dimension 4: Cost & Practicality for Mailing
Let's talk numbers. According to USPS pricing effective January 2025:
- First-Class Mail letter (1 oz): $0.73
- First-Class Mail large envelope (1 oz): $1.50
- Additional ounce for large envelopes: $0.28

A typical manila envelope weighs about 1.5 oz empty. Add a few sheets of paper, and you're at 2 oz — $1.78 postage. If you're shipping a Peloton glass water bottle (about 12 oz), you'll need a box, not a manila envelope. But some people still try to use a rigid cardboard mailer — and that's where tape choice matters even more.
3M weatherstrip tape is expensive — roughly $15–25 per roll for a 30'×1/4" roll. That's fine for sealing windows, but for 50 packages? Nope.
3M 250 masking tape is cheap (~$3–5 per roll) and widely available. But remember, it's not designed for long-term closure. If your package sits in transit for 5 days, the tape may dry out and pop open.
PSA tape (like 3M 3750 clear packaging tape) runs about $5–8 per roll, and it's engineered for shipping. It's the best value when you factor in reliability.
Verdict: PSA tape is the cost-effective workhorse for most mailing tasks. Masking tape is fine for lightweight, temporary jobs. Weatherstrip tape is specialty — save it for your doors, not your envelopes.
So... How Much Postage for a Manila Envelope?
Back to the original question. If you're using a standard manila envelope (size 10, about 9"×12"), and it's flexible enough to go through automated sorting machines, USPS considers it a “large envelope” (flat) if it's:
- Within 6.125" × 11.5" to 12" × 15" dimensions, and
- Thickness ≤ 0.75"
Weight is the key. One ounce = $1.50. Every extra ounce adds $0.28. If you stuff it to 3 ounces, you're at $2.06. Pro tip: Use a digital scale at home instead of guessing — I've rejected shipments that were under-stamped by the sender, which caused delays and annoyed customers.
And a quick note on federal mailbox laws: Under 18 U.S. Code § 1708, only USPS-authorized mail may be placed in residential mailboxes. Violations can result in fines up to $5,000 per occurrence. So if you're thinking of just leaving a package in someone's mailbox with a 3M tape job, make sure it's properly stamped and sent through the postal service.
Final Recommendations
I have mixed feelings about telling people to never use masking tape — because I've done it myself in a pinch. But here's a simple cheat sheet:
- For sealing manila envelopes (lightweight documents): Use 3M PSA packaging tape (1" wide) along the flap. It's strong enough to survive transit, and it won't lift like masking tape can.
- For shipping Peloton glass water bottles (or any fragile): Use a corrugated box, not an envelope. Tape all seams with 3M PSA tape. Add cushioning. Don't rely on weatherstrip tape — it's too thick and may not conform to box edges.
