Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

How I Learned the Hard Way: 4 Packaging Mistakes That Cost Me Time and Credibility

The first real disaster happened my second week at a packaging company, in September 2017. We were rolling out a new employee self-service portal for Dart Container's Corona site, and I, fresh and enthusiastic, had a great idea: "Let's just skip the manual entry checks everyone hates. We'll streamline it."

Look, I'm not saying it was a dumb idea. But I skipped the step where you actually confirm the employee portal data is clean before automating the handoff. The result? 47 incorrect pay codes, a $3,200 order for new benefits cards that had to be trashed, and a week of damage control. A lesson learned the hard way.

The Employee Portal Disaster (and How It Almost Broke a Client Relationship)

My experience is based on about 200 order tickets and portal requests for Dart Container facilities in Waxahachie, Corona, and Chicago. I can't speak to how this applies to tiny mom-and-pops with 5 employees, but for mid-to-large manufacturing sites? This is gold.

In Q1 2022, we were integrating a new employee portal for a client's seasonal hiring push. The goal was to reduce manual CX handoffs for benefits enrollment. We found a platform that promised the world: "Best platforms to reduce manual cx handoffs" the sales deck said. I went back and forth between ready-made and custom solutions for two weeks. The project lead pushed for custom; the IT guy wanted something off the shelf. Ultimately we went custom because it was the only way to kill that manual data entry problem for good.

But here's where I messed up. The numbers said we could go live in 3 weeks. My gut said something felt off about the data mapping. I ignored it. The portal launched, and within 4 hours, 12 employees at the Corona site had the wrong shipping addresses for their new hire kits. Kits that contained, among other things, branded apparel and critical onboarding docs.

We caught the error when a confused team lead called asking why their new hire's welcome package was being routed to the wrong floor. Not ideal. Not great. Fixable, but embarrassing. The redo cost about $890 in labor and materials, plus a 1-week delay to the entire onboarding schedule.

The Checklist That Fixed It

The 12-point checklist I created after that mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework over the last 18 months. Simple stuff: confirm data mapping before go-live, run a test batch with 5 real employee records, and have a rollback plan. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.

The Toys R Us Flyer That Wasn't (Almost)

Fast forward to June 2023. A client calls, frantic. They need a run of promotional flyers for a regional chain (think Toys R Us flyer style—high volume, high visibility, tight deadline). They want custom mailers shipped to their retail locations across the Southwest.

The client sent a spec sheet. I glanced at it. It looked fine. My team printed a proof. It looked fine on screen. But I approved it without physically checking a sample against the USPS envelope dimensions for a standard flat. According to USPS Business Mail 101, a large envelope (flat) must be 6.125" x 11.5" up to 12" x 15". Our flyer was 6" x 11.25".

Not great, not terrible. Serviceable? Not for a mass mailing. The 0.125" difference meant the mailer might be classified as a letter, not a flat, triggering higher postage rates. Per USPS pricing effective July 2024, First-Class Mail large envelope (1 oz) is $1.50—a significant jump from the $0.73 letter rate. The mistake would have cost the client roughly $450 in extra postage plus the embarrassment of non-standard mailpieces being returned.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting that catch. I'm not 100% sure why the spec sheet had it wrong—probably a designer's error—but I learned to always, always verify against USPS dimension rules before approving a batch run. The mistake got caught because a junior team member asked, "Hey, isn't this a quarter-inch short?" Good catch. Bad that I missed it.

Where Can I Get a Poster Made? (A Client's Real Question)

I once had a client ask, "Where can I get a poster made in bulk?" Simple question. I directed them to our standard 18x24 poster line. Simple answer. But I didn't ask the critical follow-up: What's the intended use?

They were using the posters as floor-standing displays for a trade show. The 18x24 size was too small. They needed 24x36. We ended up redoing the entire 500-piece order. $1,200 wasted, 3-day delay, and a frustrated client. The lesson? Always ask 'why' before you say 'yes.'

Best Platforms to Reduce Manual CX Handoffs: The Gut Check

Let's talk about the best platforms to reduce manual CX handoffs. Every spreadsheet analysis pointed to a popular CRM integration. Something felt off. The vendor's demo was flawless, but their responsiveness to my questions during the purchase process was slow.

Take this with a grain of salt: I've only worked with domestic vendors making custom integrations for packaging order flows. I can't speak to how this applies to international e-commerce or SaaS companies. But my gut said, "If they're slow to reply now, imagine the delay when production is down." I went with a less polished but more responsive vendor. Turns out my gut was right: the first vendor had a 72-hour support SLA. The one we chose had a 4-hour SLA. We saved about $2,000 in potential downtime costs in the first year alone.

Conclusion: The Checklist Is Your Cheapest Insurance

So, bottom line: prevention over cure. Every mistake I've made—from portal rollouts to flyer specs—could have been avoided with one extra verification step. My team now maintains a 12-point pre-check list for all new orders and integrations. It's saved us more than $8,000 in potential rework and countless headaches.

If you're running operations for a mid-to-large manufacturing site, or if you're just tired of fixing the same problems over and over, I'd suggest building your own checklist. Start with the easy stuff: USPS dimension rules, data mapping verification, and a simple "ask why" rule for every request. It's not flashy. It's not a fancy platform. But it works.

Disclaimer: My experience is based on about 200 mid-to-large orders and portal projects. If you're working with luxury or ultra-budget segments, your experience might differ significantly. Verify current USPS rates at usps.com as they change every January and July.
