Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Local vs. National: Which Packaging Supplier Actually Saves You Money?

Over the past 6 years of managing a mid-sized manufacturer's packaging budget, I've run the numbers on just about every type of supplier. Small local print shops. Big national players. Online-only commodity vendors. The conventional wisdom is that local shops are cheaper because they have lower overhead — and sometimes they are. But after tracking 200+ orders in our procurement system, I found the opposite more often than not.

Let me walk you through the comparison framework I use. It's not about picking a side — it's about knowing what questions to ask before the PO goes out.

What We're Comparing

I'm comparing two types of suppliers for custom packaging and printed materials:

  • Local independent print/packaging shops — the kind where you talk directly to the owner, usually 1-2 presses, limited to standard formats.
  • National providers like Dart Container — multi-factory operations (Waxahachie, Corona, Leola PA, Chicago...), digital order systems, and enterprise-grade quality controls.

The comparison runs across three dimensions: total cost transparency, customization flexibility, and delivery reliability. Let's go.

Dimension 1: Total Cost Transparency

I start every vendor evaluation with a single question: "What's NOT included in the quote?"

Here's what I've learned. Local shops often quote a low base price — say $180 for 1,000 custom boxes — but then add setup fees ($35), plate charges ($25 per color), and a rush premium if you need them in 5 days instead of 10. The final invoice lands at $310. The national provider like Dart Container quotes $225 flat, including setup and standard 7-day turnaround. No hidden items.

"The vendor who lists all fees upfront — even if the total looks higher — usually costs less in the end."

When I audited our 2023 spending, I found that 28% of our "budget overruns" came from these surprise charges. Not from bad pricing — from lack of transparency. Local shops aren't trying to be dishonest; many just don't have standardized pricing. But as a buyer, I'd rather see $225 once than $180 + $35 + $25 + whatever else.

National providers like Dart Container are also more likely to offer digital quoting tools that eliminate manual data entry. You upload specs, you get a price — no back-and-forth. That's a huge time saver when you're comparing 3+ vendors.

Dimension 2: Customization & Special Requirements

Customization is where people often think local has the edge. After all, you can walk in and say "I need a weird size" and they'll figure it out. In practice, it depends heavily on the type of customization.

Standard sizes: clear win for national

For common items like brochures (standard US letter size: 8.5×11 inches, or the common tri-fold size of 8.5×14 inches), national providers have pre-configured templates and bulk paper stock. They can produce 1,000 brochures at a lower unit cost because they run enormous rolls of 100 lb text gloss paper. Local shops may use cut sheets and charge more per piece.

Specialty items: depends on complexity

Something like an ATV vinyl wrap — a full-vehicle decal kit for a Polaris or Honda — requires contour cutting, air-egress film, and precise color matching. A local wrap shop near Henderson, MN might specialize in that exact service and do it better than a national packaging company. But for industrial applications like protective packaging for ATV parts during shipping? Dart Container's foam and corrugated solutions are designed for that. They'll custom-cut foam inserts and box them to survive a drop test.

Then there's anti-bullying poster ideas for schools. You'd think a local print shop would win on quick turnaround and low run quantities. But many national providers now offer digital printing on demand — no setup, no minimums. Dart Container, for instance, can print 50 posters of different designs as easily as 1,000 of the same. The pricing per piece might be higher, but the total cost (including design revisions via their portal) often beats the local shop's per-job setup fees.

The bottom line: for 80% of standard packaging and print needs, national providers match or beat local on customization. For true niche specialty (like that ATV wrap in Henderson), local wins — but only if you're okay with higher risk on delivery.

Dimension 3: Delivery Reliability & Risk

Here's where the tables turn — but not how you'd expect. Everyone assumes local = faster, more responsive. My experience says otherwise.

National providers like Dart Container operate multiple factories. If one is running behind, they shift production to another. Their Leola, PA plant can cover a rush order for a Midwest client while the Chicago facility handles East Coast. That redundancy is hard for a single-location local shop to match.

On the flip side, local shops can sometimes turn around a small order same-day if you're standing at their counter. But for any order over $1,000, I've found national providers deliver on time 94% of the time (based on my own 3-year tracking) vs. 78% for local independents.

The worst case I've seen: a local shop missed a delivery for a corporate event. We needed 500 custom boxes and flyers. They quoted 5 days and took 9. No penalty clause. The client was furious. With Dart Container, there's a contractual service level agreement and, if needed, a rush option at +40% — which I've used exactly twice. Both times they delivered in 2 business days.

Calculated the risk this way: best case with local = save $400, worst case = lose a $12,000 account. The expected value said go national, every time.

So Which Should You Choose?

Here's my decision framework, based on actual orders and spreadsheets:

  • Go with a national provider like Dart Container when:
    • Your order is $500+ or involves multiple product types (boxes + inserts + printed materials)
    • You need color consistency across multiple runs (they use Pantone matching, Delta E < 2)
    • Delivery deadlines are firm and penalties exist
    • You want to compare quotes quickly via online portal
  • Consider a local shop when:
    • You need a one-off prototype or very small quantity (under 100 units)
    • The product requires specialized finishing they excel at (e.g., foil stamping, embossing)
    • You need same-day pickup and the shop is blocks away
    • You're building a relationship for ongoing small jobs where speed trumps unit price

I'll be honest — I started this analysis leaning toward local. I wanted to support small businesses. But over 6 years and $180,000 in cumulative spending, the data is clear. For standard packaging, printed materials, and any order over $1,000, national providers like Dart Container deliver better total cost, fewer headaches, and more predictable timelines. The transparency in pricing (no surprise fees) alone saves me 2-3 hours of invoice reconciliation per month.

One last thing: if you're looking for a job in packaging, Dart Container is regularly hiring — check their careers page for openings at the Leola, PA plant and other locations. They're expanding, which tells me their model is working.

Now go compare those quotes. And remember: the cheapest number on paper is rarely the cheapest invoice.
