Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Lessons from Ordering 50,000 Bottles: Why Specs Matter More Than Price

The Day I Stopped Trusting Samples

I'm a quality compliance manager at a packaging company. Every week I review inbound shipments of bottles, jars, and closures—roughly 200 unique SKUs per year. In Q1 2024, I rejected 12% of first deliveries due to spec deviations. That number should have been zero.

This story starts with a single order. We needed spray bottle for ironing (yes, that's a thing—a fine mist for wrinkle release), foam hand wash bottle with a pump, round plastic jar for cream, and small dropper bottles plastic plus small plastic dropper inserts. All in bulk. The vendor we chose had great samples. But samples lie.

The Process: What Could Go Wrong?

I knew the rules. Get written specs. Check tolerances. Do a first-article inspection. But I'd worked with this supplier for three years without major issues. So when they said “same as last time, just different colors,” I thought, “what are the odds?”

Well, the odds caught up with me.

The Spray Bottle Debacle

The spray bottle in bulk order arrived with nozzles that varied by 0.3mm in orifice diameter. Normal tolerance is 0.1mm. Everything I'd read about sourcing said “premium vendors are worth the premium.” In practice, this mid-tier vendor's samples matched premium quality. But production runs? Not so much.

The conventional wisdom is that samples are representative. My experience with this order suggests otherwise. Only after testing 50 random pieces from the batch did we find that 18% had inconsistent spray patterns. That would have wrecked the user experience for our customer.

The Dropper Nightmare

Then came the small dropper bottles plastic and small plastic dropper inserts. I assumed “same specs” meant identical results across different bottle sizes. Didn't verify. Turned out the dropper caps didn't fit the bottle necks because the thread pitch had been changed—a “minor update” the supplier forgot to mention.

"I only believe in double-checking specs after ignoring that rule and eating a $4,500 reorder."

The most frustrating part: we had the proof of concept from their sample set. But samples are made with extra care. Production is where shortcuts happen.

The Foam Hand Wash Bottle Surprise

The foam hand wash bottle seemed straightforward—until we filled it with soap. The foam pump mechanism clogged after 20 cycles because the inner spring was a lower gauge than specified. The vendor claimed it was within "industry standard." I rejected the batch. They redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes spring gauge and cycle-life requirements.

Results: What Fixed It

After the third issue in one order—the round plastic jar arrived with a wall thickness 15% below spec—I implemented a new verification protocol. Every new batch gets a full dimensional and functional test before we accept. Since then, rejections dropped from 12% to under 3%.

Did it slow us down? Yes. Was it worth the hassle? Absolutely. A $22,000 redo plus delayed launch taught me that speed without verification is just expensive guesswork.

Recap: What the Industry Has Taught Me

The packaging industry has evolved. Five years ago, many buyers relied on relationships and handshake deals. Today, data is the currency. According to the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA), spec non-conformance is the #1 cause of supply chain delays (Source: ISTA Annual Report, 2023).

Some things haven't changed:

  • Always get written specs, even from trusted vendors.
  • First-article inspection isn't optional.
  • Mid-tier can beat premium—if you verify.

But the execution has transformed. Today, we use digital measurement tools and batch sampling protocols that didn't exist five years ago. To be fair, the old relationships still matter—they make negotiating fixes easier. But the fundamentals now rely on data, not memory.

Part of me wishes I could go back to simpler times. Another part knows that rigor saves money. How do I reconcile? Simple. I keep the relationships. I just add the paperwork.

Prices as of February 2025; verify current rates with your supplier. This lesson cost me $27,000 in reorders and lost time. Don't learn it the hard way.
