Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Packaging as a Story: A Brand Manager’s Guide to Design That Connects

The brand was twenty years old, and it was invisible. A family-owned coffee roaster in Rotterdam, it had loyal customers but no story on the shelf. The packaging was functional – a plain kraft bag with a logo printed in black. That was the problem.

When papermart's packaging team started the project, we didn't begin with color choices or fonts. We asked a different question: what does this company stand for? That question shaped every decision, from the carton board to the finish, and it turned out to be far more important than any trend.

The Opening Scene: Packaging as the First Chapter

People make snap judgments. Studies suggest that roughly 70% of purchase decisions happen in the store, not at home. A shopper walking down the aisle gives a product about three seconds before moving on. In that short window, packaging either delivers a story or stays silent.

The coffee roaster's old bag told people nothing. It did not say small-batch, it did not say family, and it definitely did not say why it cost two euros more than the supermarket brand. We started by writing down the story the founders kept telling us: their grandfather bought the first roaster in 1987, they still roast every Monday, and they reject deliveries that don't smell right. That text became the backbone of the design.

Turning Brand Values into a Visual Language

Once you have the story, you need to translate it into something visual. For this brand, the values were warmth, patience, and a bit of stubbornness. So we chose a warm cream carton, a deep brown for the logo, and a deliberately unpolished illustration of the original roaster. No stock photos. No generic coffee cup.

Here is the compromise. The matte soft-touch coating felt great, but it added about 4% to the unit cost, and it made the package harder to recycle in some local streams. We ended up using it only on the front panel and left the rest as uncoated board. In a similar way, we tested with a group of consumers and found that the new design generated more positive comments, but it also confused people who expected a shiny, high-gloss coffee package. Not every change feels good to everyone.

You can find where to buy moving boxes for cheap, and those boxes will move things fine. But the same basic material starts to mean something different when it carries a brand's story. The roaster's carton is, after all, just paper and ink. The story is what makes it worth picking up.

Shelf Presence: Where Story and Sales Meet

The new design sat on the shelf next to big international brands, and we watched people walk by. On the first test, the pick-up rate went up 22% compared with the old bag. A handful of shoppers even turned the package over to read the back – something they rarely did with coffee in bulk bins.

That shelf test had a small sample size and a short window, so we did not treat it as a prediction. What stood out more was the way the story helped the brand hold price. The roaster had planned to keep prices flat for the next season. Instead, they had a little room during their wholesale conversations, because the packaging made the product feel less like a commodity. An e-commerce manager in the PaperMart NJ region told us the same thing had happened with their own rebrand a year earlier.

Tracking created its own logistical layer. We used a papermart shipping code for every prototype and pilot order, so the printer and the design team could quickly see which version went to which store. It sounds like a minor detail, but when you are juggling four shelf tests and a holiday promo, a clear code saves more time than you expect.

The Unboxing: A Final Chance to Be Remembered

The last moment of the story happens after the coffee arrives. We designed an inner sleeve with a short note about the roast date and a small illustration of the founder's handwritten tasting notes. It was not expensive. The sleeve cost about 2% of the total package, but it created a moment that people talked about.

A few months after launch, the roaster's team counted mentions on social media. Posts with photos of the package went from about three per month to fourteen. That number is too small for a statistical conclusion, but it convinced the founders that a package that makes people reach for their phone is worth the extra work. We also saw a couple of complaints about the matte front panel showing fingerprints, so we adjusted the coating area – a reminder that no packaging decision is ever truly finished.

There are cheaper ways to move a product. If you search hard enough, you can find where to find moving boxes for free, and there is no shortage of inexpensive moving boxes from suppliers who just need to get product from A to B. But a package that tells a story does something those boxes cannot: it stays in someone's mind after the transaction. For the team at papermart, that is the entire point.
