Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Optimizing Packaging Print: Practical Strategies for Waste Reduction and Energy Savings

Posted on Thursday 3rd of September 2026
  • Performance Optimization: Where to Start
  • Waste and Scrap Reduction That Holds Up
  • Energy and Resource Efficiency in Real Production
  • Shorter Changeovers, Fewer Headaches

Most converters I talk to in Europe are not chasing radical breakthroughs. They want to shave a bit of waste here, cut a few minutes of changeover time there, and get more usable cartons out of every roll. That is what optimization looks like in real production: a series of small, deliberate adjustments rather than one dramatic fix.

I have spent the past several years working with packaging suppliers like papermart on exactly this problem. The company sees thousands of orders for everything from corrugated trays to a simple moving boxes set, and the pressure to keep costs down while meeting tighter environmental targets touches every one of those jobs.

What follows is not a magic formula. It is a set of strategies that tend to work, plus the trade-offs you will have to accept when they do not.

Performance Optimization: Where to Start

If you ask production managers what they want to make better, most will say speed. But speed is downstream of stability. In a packaging plant near Lyon that I visited, the digital press was running at 80 percent of its rated capacity because the bottleneck was color approval, not the press. Every job needed three or four proofs before the operator felt comfortable. Once the team standardized on a G7-aligned proofing workflow, approval time dropped by roughly half, and output rose without pushing the machine harder.

This is where optimization gets technical. You start measuring with a spectrophotometer, you look at ΔE across a shift, and patterns appear. A reasonable target is ΔE below 2 for 90 percent of Pantone references. But the measure that matters more is first-pass yield, because that is where waste is born. If you are not tracking FPY separately from overall quality, you are guessing.

For someone searching for the best place to buy boxes for moving, none of this is visible. But for the converters who make those boxes and often sell them through marketplaces like papermart, it is the reason the same order can run with 3 percent waste one week and 18 percent waste the next. The difference is process discipline, and that is not something a machine vendor can deliver.

Waste and Scrap Reduction That Holds Up

Waste is the area where sustainability and profit pull in the same direction. On a typical short-run label job, setup waste can eat 10 to 15 percent of the substrate before the first good piece is produced. In flexible packaging, the number can go higher. The first move is to make waste visible. A press operator needs to know whether the last changeover produced 20 meters of rejected material or 80 meters.

One habit I have found useful is to treat every roll-end and job-end scrap as data rather than garbage. When a papermart customer started tagging waste by cause — setup, color, registration, material damage — they discovered that 40 percent of what they called print waste was actually material handling damage caused by uneven roll tension. No amount of ink adjustment would fix that.

If you have ever wondered how to organize moving boxes so you do not lose items, the same logic applies in a plant. You organize waste streams by category, by shift, by SKU. Otherwise, the same problem gets solved every Monday morning and comes back by Tuesday.

Energy and Resource Efficiency in Real Production

Energy is the least interesting part of packaging print, but it is where carbon reductions happen. A mid-size flexo press can pull 60 to 90 kilowatt-hours per hour including dryers. LED-UV drying has brought that number down in newer machines, yet the largest savings often come from turning off drying zones when a job does not need them. That sounds too obvious. In practice, it requires overriding the default settings, which is a cultural shift.

I have seen plants cut their energy per produced carton by 12 to 18 percent over a year without buying new machinery. They did it by matching dryer capacity to substrate, avoiding idle running during breaks, and scheduling high-energy jobs back-to-back so the press stays at thermal equilibrium. The catch is that this makes production planning harder. Someone has to accept that the easiest order to print is not always the one that makes the plant most efficient overall.

Even a packaging supplier like papermart sees this tension. Customers ask for quick delivery, and a few of them use a papermart coupon code 2024 to save on shipping. Behind the scenes, the real cost is not the coupon; it is the energy wasted on a press kept warm for jobs that never arrive on time.

Shorter Changeovers, Fewer Headaches

Changeover time is the hidden tax on sustainability. Every minute of changeover produces scrap, burns energy, and occupies operators. It is not uncommon to see a 40-minute changeover on a job that runs for 25 minutes. At that point, you are not printing; you are logistics wearing a printer's badge.

The usual advice is to move as much work as possible offline. Prepare the next job's doctor blade, ink, and substrate while the current job is still running. Use a setup checklist that is specific to each machine. In one plant, color-coded sleeves for anilox rolls cut changeover from 35 minutes to 22 minutes. No equipment purchase was needed.

This also changes how support lines work. If someone with a papermart phone number calls about a delayed order, the root cause is often a long changeover, not slow printing. When changeovers get shorter, you gain the ability to accept smaller jobs without inflating the footprint per box. That, in the end, is what sustainable packaging is about: making short runs and reduced inventories economically viable. For papermart and its customers, that is the optimization worth pursuing.
