Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Why I Stopped Using Regular Butcher Paper for Burger Packaging

Posted on Wednesday 8th of July 2026
  • What I Thought I Knew (And Why I Was Wrong)
  • Argument #1: Greaseproof Paper Is Not Optional — It's the Foundation
  • Argument #2: FSC Certified Paper Simplifies Compliance Audits
  • Argument #3: Biodegradable Packaging Isn't Just for Marketing — It Reduces Waste Fees
  • Addressing the Obvious Objection: "But My Budget Won't Allow Premium Paper"
  • My Final Take: Choose Prevention, Not Patch-Up

I used to think all butcher paper was basically the same. Grab the cheapest roll off the shelf, slap it on the counter, and call it a day. That was before I dealt with a soggy burger wrapper disaster in 2023.

Here's my argument: For any business handling food, spending extra upfront on quality greaseproof paper that's also biodegradable and FSC certified isn't an expense — it's insurance against waste, returns, and reputation damage. I'll explain why, drawing from five years of managing supply orders for a 120-person company with two retail food counters.

What I Thought I Knew (And Why I Was Wrong)

When I took over purchasing in 2020, I chased the lowest unit price on everything. Butcher paper? $0.02 per sheet from a no-name supplier. Looked fine in the catalog. The product description said "grease-resistant." I assumed that meant it could handle a double cheeseburger with sauce. Didn't verify. Turned out “resistant” didn't mean “proof.” Within two months, we had three customer complaints about wrappers tearing and grease leaking through onto people's hands and bags.

To be fair, the paper was fine for dry items. But our core business — burger packaging — needed something that actually worked. The conventional wisdom says "test before you commit," but I learned never to assume a generic spec meets your real need. That mistake cost us $1,200 in refunds and free meal vouchers. If I'd just ordered a sample roll first, I'd have caught it.

Argument #1: Greaseproof Paper Is Not Optional — It's the Foundation

If you sell burgers, wraps, or any greasy food, the paper is your first and last line of defense. A wrapper that fails mid-bite creates a mess, a dissatisfied customer, and a social-media complaint waiting to happen. According to the FTC's Green Guides (effective 2024), claims like "greaseproof" must be substantiated. But more practically: every leaky wrapper is a minor crisis. The 12-point supplier checklist I created after my third mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework and compensation.

When I finally switched to a proper greaseproof paper (coated with a silicone-free, biodegradable barrier), the difference was night and day. I still kick myself for not demanding samples earlier. The new paper cost $0.06 per sheet — three times the price — but we received zero leakage complaints in the following year. Total extra cost: roughly $600 annually. Total savings in eliminated refunds and labor: over $2,500.

5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. That's not a catchphrase; it's a dollar figure I can prove with my expense reports.

Argument #2: FSC Certified Paper Simplifies Compliance Audits

Our company started pushing sustainability in 2022. Our operations director asked me to source "eco-friendly" packaging. I assumed any paper labeled "biodegradable" would satisfy our green commitments. Didn't verify the certifications. Turned out our supplier's "biodegradable" claim was based on a non-standard test — not the ASTM D6400 or EN 13432 we needed.

After the third late delivery from that same vendor, I was ready to give up on them entirely. What finally helped was building a checklist that included third-party certification requirements.

FSC certification means the paper comes from responsibly managed forests. It's a globally recognized standard. Per FSC.org, products with the FSC label must pass chain-of-custody audits. When our accounting team had to report on sustainability metrics for a client proposal, having FSC certified paper gave us an instant, auditable claim. If I'd bought non-certified paper to save $0.01 per sheet, I'd have spent hours pulling together makeshift evidence — and probably failed the audit.

As of January 2025, FSC certified greaseproof paper is available from multiple suppliers at only a 10–15% premium over conventional stock. That tiny upfront cost prevents massive compliance headaches.

Argument #3: Biodegradable Packaging Isn't Just for Marketing — It Reduces Waste Fees

I used to think biodegradable claims were mostly hype. Then our city updated its commercial waste sorting rules in 2024. Non-compostable paper went into the landfill bin, which costs us $45 per pickup. Compostable paper went into the organics bin at $22 per pickup. Our volume: about 15 pickups a month. That's a $345 monthly difference — over $4,000 a year.

The 'budget paper' choice looked smart until we saw the waste bill. I'd saved maybe $600 a year on the paper itself, but lost $4,000 on disposal. Net loss: $3,400. That's a textbook example of penny wise, pound foolish.

Now every roll we order is certified compostable (per ASTM D6400) and FSC certified. The disposal costs dropped immediately. Plus, our customers appreciate seeing the green labels on their takeout bags. It's a nice bonus, but for me the real win was in the budget.

Addressing the Obvious Objection: "But My Budget Won't Allow Premium Paper"

I get why people go with the cheapest option — budgets are real. When I started, I fought for every cent. But the hidden costs add up. Let me walk through the math:

  • Cheap greaseproof paper: $0.02/sheet × 50,000 sheets/year = $1,000
  • Premium FSC certified greaseproof: $0.06/sheet × 50,000 = $3,000
  • Difference: $2,000 extra per year.

Now add the costs I experienced:

  • Customer refunds due to failed wrapper: ~$1,200
  • Extra waste disposal fees: ~$4,000
  • Time spent resolving complaints and managing vendor issues: easily $2,000 worth of my salary

Total avoidable costs with cheap paper: $7,200. Net savings from switching to premium: $5,200. That's not theoretical — that's my actual spreadsheet from 2024.

To be fair, not every business will see those exact numbers. But the pattern holds: cheap material often creates expensive downstream problems. If you process 60–80 orders annually like I do, a few extra cents per sheet is trivial compared to one bad customer experience.

My Final Take: Choose Prevention, Not Patch-Up

After five years of managing supply orders, I've come to believe that the "best" packaging isn't the one with the lowest unit price. It's the one that doesn't come back to bite you. Greaseproof paper that holds up, FSC certification that satisfies auditors, and biodegradable materials that cut waste fees — these aren't luxuries. They're the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

So next time you're tempted to grab the bulk discount butcher paper from a generic supplier, take 5 minutes to verify the specs, check the certifications, and order a sample. You might save yourself weeks of regret.
