Glitter as an Initiative

#sparkleinitiative - a compliment, a smile, a pat on the back have the power to transform and move mountains.

Every day there's a chance to sparkle. We know how that sounds! We, along with so many of you, get bogged down when watching the news or reading negative things right in your Facebook timeline. And sometimes those things are heavy and genuinely debilitating. We aren't suggesting a Pollyanna attitude. But close.  How do we handle it all without getting overwhelmed? Especially during the holidays?

Enter attitude. It's that thing only you can control on a daily basis, and it has the power to help or harm. So when we say that a little bit of sparkle can solve most problems, what we mean is that focusing on how to make a situation better, by doing only what we can control, can turn negatives into positives.

This holiday season is a great time to test out sparkle at holiday gatherings, and getting into the sparkly mood. Remember, the only thing you can control is yourself. Let go of other people's opinions and allow only the things that exude positivity into your realm of influence.

Go forth and sparkle!

Why I Stopped Buying Paper Boxes Based on Unit Price (and You Should Too)

I Thought I Was Saving Money. I Wasn't.

When I first started ordering custom paper boxes and paper packaging for our brand, I made the same mistake almost every new procurement person makes: I picked the lowest per-unit price. It seems logical, right? You get quotes, compare unit costs, and choose the cheapest. That approach cost me roughly $15,000 over 12 orders in my first two years—money I could have saved if someone had explained total cost of ownership (TCO) to me earlier.

I'm the person who now maintains our team's packaging order checklist. Before any purchase—whether it's perfume boxes, cosmetic boxes, or paper gift bags—we run the numbers through a TCO framework. Here's what I learned the hard way.

The $500 Quote That Cost $890

Let me give you a concrete example. In September 2022, I needed 2,000 custom paper gift bags for a holiday promotion. Vendor A quoted $0.25 per bag ($500 total). Vendor B quoted $0.32 per bag ($640 total). I went with Vendor A. By the time the order arrived, the real cost was:

  • $500 unit price
  • $85 shipping (ground, 5-day, not included in quote)
  • $120 setup fee ("plate charge"—they hadn't mentioned it upfront)
  • $45 revision fee (I made one small change after approval—they charged per revision)
  • $140 redo cost (the boxes arrived and 10% were misprinted—their policy required me to pay for replacements)

Total: $890. That's $0.445 per bag, far more than Vendor B's $0.32 all-inclusive quote (which included shipping, setup, and one free revision). I only believed in TCO after ignoring that advice and eating the difference.

What Total Cost of Ownership Really Includes

Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss the hidden costs that can add 30–50% to the final bill. Here's what I now account for before comparing any quote for paper boxes, perfume boxes, or any custom packaging:

1. Upfront Fees You Don't Expect

Setup fees in paper packaging printing typically include plate making ($15–50 per color for offset), die cutting setup ($50–200 depending on complexity), and custom Pantone color matching ($25–75 per color). Many online printers bury these in the quote; others add them separately. Always ask: "What fees are NOT included in the unit price?"

2. Shipping and Handling

A $0.15 cosmetic box might cost $0.25 to ship when ordered in small quantities. I once ordered 1,000 paper boxes from a "cheap" vendor and paid $180 in freight—more than the box cost itself. Ground shipping for corrugated boxes is often based on dimensional weight. Get a shipping estimate before approving.

3. Revision and Rework Costs

Revision fees are the silent budget killer. I've seen vendors charge $25–75 per proof change. More importantly, if you rush approval and the boxes arrive wrong, you either live with defects or pay for a redo. The $140 redo I mentioned? That was cheap compared to the time I ordered 5,000 paper gift bags with an off-center logo and had to trash 300 bags ($240 wasted) because they were too embarrassing to use.

4. Time Cost

Delivery delays cost real money. In Q1 2024, I needed perfume boxes for a product launch. The cheap vendor promised 7 days but delivered in 14. We missed a trade show. That lost sales opportunity was easily $2,000+ in potential revenue—far more than any unit price difference.

But Isn't TCO Overkill for Small Orders?

You might be thinking: "I only order 200 paper bags at a time. Do I really need to calculate all this?"

Yes, because the relative impact of hidden costs is actually larger on small orders. A $50 setup fee on a $200 order is a 25% surcharge. On a $2,000 order it's 2.5%. Small orders hurt more. I've caught 47 potential errors using my TCO checklist in the past 18 months—many from small orders where a "cheap" quote would have been 40% more expensive total.

Another objection: "But premium vendors are always more expensive." That's not true. In my experience, mid-range vendors who are transparent about pricing often have lower TCO than budget vendors who nickel-and-dime. The key is to ask every vendor for the same breakdown: unit price + setup + shipping + revision allowance + rush premiums. Then compare apples to apples.

The Lesson: Price Is a Starting Point, Not a Decision

I now treat unit price like a menu price at a restaurant—the final bill always includes drinks, tips, and tax. When I'm choosing a supplier for paper boxes, paper packaging, gift bags, or cosmetic boxes, I calculate TCO before signing off. It takes 10 minutes and has saved us thousands.

If you're still buying packaging based on the lowest per-unit cost, you're almost certainly overpaying. Start asking the right questions: "What's the all-in cost delivered, with one revision included, for a guaranteed production date?" That number is the one that matters.

Stop choosing by price. Start choosing by total cost.

Pricing reference: Business card printing (500 cards, 14pt, double-sided, standard turnaround) ranges from $20–120 depending on stock and finish; envelope printing (#10, 500 qty, 1-color) $80–180. Based on online printer quotes, January 2025. Verify current rates.
